Volume 1, Chapter 49: Is His Brain Fried?
Jiang Shuwei’s entire body was tense like a drawn bow, her eyes fixed with panic upon the man closing in on her.
The aura emanating from him enveloped her, bringing an overwhelming sense of oppression.
"He Jingcheng, what are you doing?" Jiang Shuwei asked, flustered and uneasy. This was the very first time He Jingcheng had ever gotten this close to her, and his behavior was completely baffling.
He Jingcheng’s gaze locked onto her rosy, soft lips, which looked like flower petals kissed by morning dew—tender and full.
"Jiang Shuwei... actually, as long as you aren’t so aggressive and don't always put on that arrogant and overbearing expression, things between us... wouldn't be entirely impossible." As he spoke, He Jingcheng tilted his head slightly and slowly drew closer to her.
"Back off, don't try to infect me with your virus." Taking advantage of the man's complete lack of precaution, Jiang Shuwei shoved him away with all her might.
Before he could taste those sweet and delicate lips, He Jingcheng was pushed backward and fell. Fortunately, the large bed was right behind him, and his torso bounced slightly against the mattress. The next second, his handsome face turned dark and grim.
Jiang Shuwei’s breathing was also slightly uneven, but her gaze remained firm. She said, "He Jingcheng, are you out of your mind with fever? Have your brains gone soft too? Don't do things you'll regret later. If you kissed me now, I’d inexplicably find myself slapped with the charge of seduction next time." With that, Jiang Shuwei flicked the medicine vial with her finger, prepared the dosage, and drew the liquid into the syringe.
"Lie down on your stomach, let me clear your head." Jiang Shuwei was not gentle in the slightest.
He Jingcheng clenched his teeth, glaring at the woman who had completely ruined the mood. He punched the bed in frustration and sneered, "I must really be seriously ill. Don't worry, it was just my sickness acting up in the brain that made me want to kiss you."
"Got it, stop talking nonsense. Lift your hips up," Jiang Shuwei commanded coldly.
He Jingcheng had no choice but to obey. Without a hint of hesitation, Jiang Shuwei plunged the needle in and injected the medicine.
The sharp pain made He Jingcheng shudder all over. This woman really didn't know how to hold back her strength.
"It's a good thing you didn't become a doctor. Otherwise, there's no telling how many people would have died at your hands," He Jingcheng said as he got up, pulled up his pajama pants, and delivered a cold sneer.
Jiang Shuwei lowered her head to tidy up the tray and replied indifferently, "Relax, you're different from others. You're my husband, while others are my patients. A husband and a patient get treated differently."
"Are you implying something?" He Jingcheng narrowed his eyes.
Jiang Shuwei chuckled lightly. "If my husband dies, I won't feel sorry; I can just find another one. If a patient dies, my crime would be unforgivable, so of course I have to take it seriously."
"You..." He Jingcheng was so angry his face turned black. He really wished he could donate Jiang Shuwei's sharp tongue to someone who needed it.
Jiang Shuwei turned around, left his bedroom, and returned to the children's room to continue caring for He Tingting and attending to her work.
The quietness of the bedroom allowed He Jingcheng's mind to calm down as well.
Just a moment ago, he had actually wanted to kiss Jiang Shuwei.
A cold didn't just give you a fever; it apparently made you lose your mind.
He Jingcheng shook off those redundant thoughts from his mind.
On the eighth floor of the Yunrun Building, Jiang Shuwei was directing workers on installing computers in preparation for the company's relocation.
Meanwhile, renovations were also in full swing on both the seventh and ninth floors.
Inside the elevator, Jiang Shuwei ran into Su Mian.
Su Mian was dressed in an expensive haute couture outfit, exuding an elegant aura with a hint of pride in her eyes.
Su Mian coldly glared at Jiang Shuwei, wondering to herself why this woman still hadn't been driven out of the He family.
Could it be that Jingcheng had forgiven her over the incident where Qin Weizhou sent her books?
At this thought, Su Mian felt irritated and shot a venomous glare as Jiang Shuwei departed.
Jiang Shuwei realized that whenever He Jingcheng wasn't around, this was Su Mian's true attitude toward her—gone was the gentle and generous facade, replaced entirely by coldness and contempt.
He Tingting's school was holding a family sports day, and Jiang Shuwei had to clear her morning schedule to attend.
He Jingcheng's cold had cleared up. At the breakfast table, listening to his niece happily chatter about the sports day events, he glanced at Jiang Shuwei and asked, "Are you going, or am I?"
Jiang Shuwei replied calmly, "Depends on Tingting's wishes."
He Tingting propped her small chin on her hands and said, "I want both of you to go."
Jiang Shuwei paused and looked at He Jingcheng.
He Jingcheng reached out and ruffled He Tingting's hair. "It's only for the morning, just three games. One person is enough."
"Then I want Auntie to accompany me," He Tingting said.
"Alright, I'll go with you." Hearing that He Jingcheng wasn't going, Jiang Shuwei breathed a sigh of relief.
She used to yearn for more contact with him, but now, she actually found herself dreading excessive interaction with him.
He Jingcheng cast a sidelong glance at Jiang Shuwei, taking in the furrow of her brow.
He figured she must be terribly disappointed that he wasn't going.
At nine o'clock in the morning, the opening ceremony commenced. Jiang Shuwei held up her phone to record a video of He Tingting, but when she turned her head, she spotted Su Mian sitting in the spectator stands.
Su Mian was also looking over in their direction. Upon seeing that it was Jiang Shuwei accompanying He Tingting to the event, her pretty face sank with deep disappointment.
She had intentionally pushed back her work and accompanied her young cousin here, assuming she would run into He Jingcheng.
This scheming woman Jiang Shuwei knew He Jingcheng detested her, so she was desperately trying to curry favor with He Tingting.
Nowadays, she even acted as if she were He Tingting's mother, sticking her nose into every single activity. How shameless.
Jiang Shuwei was equally surprised to see Su Mian here.
Once the children finished their performances, the game segments began.
The first event was the obstacle course. Jiang Shuwei held He Tingting's small hand, getting ready at the starting line.
From nearby came a little boy's huffy voice: "He Tingting, I'm definitely going to win."
Jiang Shuwei turned her head and saw that in the neighboring lane, Su Mian was also holding the hand of a chubby little boy.
He Tingting raised her small chin with absolute confidence. "You're going to lose."
Jiang Shuwei looked down at the little girl and decided to give her full effort in the race.
At the sound of the starting pistol, everyone dashed forward.
Although He Tingting was small, she was very nimble. Jiang Shuwei pulled her along as they surged ahead.
On the other side, Su Mian wanted to run fast too, but her sixty-odd-pound cousin was absolute dead weight. He had already taken a tumble right before the start, and after getting back up, he complained that his knees hurt, crying as he ran.
Su Mian wanted to win—at the very least, she wanted to beat Jiang Shuwei.
Yet watching her cousin hold her back like this, she genuinely felt like beating him up.
After four laps of navigating obstacles, Jiang Shuwei and He Tingting's seamless teamwork ultimately earned them a fantastic second-place finish.
Su Mian ran up dripping with sweat and looked at her cousin in disgust. "I told you to lose weight, but you wouldn't listen. Look at you now, falling over just from running a few steps."
The little boy cried loudly, making Su Mian feel terribly embarrassed. But since he was the darling son of her maternal family, she had no choice but to coax him while wiping away his snot.
Holding her small trophy, He Tingting happily asked Jiang Shuwei to take pictures of her.
The second game was a relay race, another running event.
Having already been humiliated once by her chubby cousin, Su Mian didn't want to participate, but the little boy insisted, leaving her with no choice.
Watching Jiang Shuwei and He Tingting's joyful expressions, Su Mian clenched her fists in anger.
Glancing at her cousin, whose face was smeared with tears and snot, Su Mian was secretly grateful that He Jingcheng hadn't come today; otherwise, she would have lost every shred of her dignity.
Jiang Shuwei and He Tingting secured another fantastic third-place finish, earning yet another medal.
Finally, it was time for a game that didn't involve running: riddle-guessing, where the adults acted out clues and the children guessed the animals.
Su Mian thought to herself that she was bound to win this round.
As soon as the competition began, Su Mian and her cousin grabbed the lead.
Standing nearby, Jiang Shuwei and He Tingting watched as Su Mian saw the name of an animal and immediately began acting it out. The chubby boy widened his eyes, giggled, and asked, "Cousin, is it a pig?"
Su Mian rolled her eyes and continued her charade. The chubby boy laughed so hard he couldn't stand straight. "Cousin, you look just like a stupid pig."
Su Mian walked right over and gave him a light smack on the head, resolving then and there never to accompany him to embarrass herself again.
Out of five clues, they only guessed one correctly, shattering Su Mian's hopes of winning.
She had no choice but to sit in the stands and watch Jiang Shuwei and He Tingting's performance.
He Tingting actually guessed four out of five correctly. Jiang Shuwei stepped forward, cradled the child's small face, and showered her with kisses, the two of them acting as affectionate as a real mother and daughter.
Seeing this, Su Mian's heart sank lower and lower.
He Tingting truly was a redundant and eyesore of an existence.
