Chapter 39: Strengthening the Village Defenses
The aftershocks of the war had not yet fully subsided, but Li Chuan knew this was the optimal moment to begin consolidating their defenses. He stood in the center of the village, his gaze sweeping firmly over the gathered villagers.
"May I have your attention, everyone? I have something to say," Li Chuan announced, his voice steady and carrying an air of convincing authority.
The villagers gradually quieted down, their eyes fixed on the young leader who had guided them through the crisis.
"Our previous victory gave us hope, but the enemy could return at any moment," Li Chuan said, getting straight to the point. "Starting today, we must build a comprehensive defense system to ensure our home is no longer violated."
An elderly fisherman stood up and asked, "Village Chief, what exactly should we do? Will we be too spread out?"
"It is precisely because we are scattered that we need unified coordination." Li Chuan pulled out a sketched map and spread it on the ground. "This is the topographical map of our village. These coastal locations are suitable for outposts, with two to three people on rotation at each. The village carpenters and craftsmen will be responsible for building fortifications, such as wooden fences, watchtowers, and secret passages."
"Secret passages?" the young fisherman Liu Wang asked, puzzled. "What are those for?"
Li Chuan explained patiently, "The secret passages are not just for defense; they also serve to help villagers evacuate in an emergency. The enemy may not be able to break through our lines, but we must ensure we can preserve our lives."
Lanna, standing nearby, added, "These fortifications cannot be built overnight; they require everyone's unity and cooperation. The supply of timber and stone must be arranged as soon as possible."
Upon hearing this, the villagers eagerly volunteered. "Village Chief, I still have plenty of timber at home—it can be used at any time!"
"Leave the stone to me; my friends and I can haul it back from the mountains!"
Li Chuan nodded. "Excellent. That is the spirit of our fishing village."
"Defensive works alone are not enough; we need a mobile patrol," Li Chuan continued. "The duty of this team is to regularly patrol the waters and land around the village and report any anomalies immediately."
The young men of the village responded enthusiastically. Liu Wang asked excitedly, "Village Chief, how will we train? Are we going to fight like we did against the Japanese pirates?"
"It’s not that simple." Li Chuan gestured for everyone to be quiet. "The patrol team must not only learn to fight but also master reconnaissance and signaling skills. This afternoon, Lanna will demonstrate some basic techniques, and official training will begin tomorrow."
Lanna took over, saying, "The patrol team’s work may seem simple, but it is actually critical. Once an enemy approaches, our reaction time might only be a few minutes. Everyone must be serious and diligent during training."
The young men rolled up their sleeves, and the atmosphere in the village became instantly vibrant.
In the following days, every corner of the village was buzzing with activity.
On the coastal heights, Uncle Zhang the carpenter was leading several workers in building a simple watchtower. Li Chuan walked over to inspect it. "Uncle Zhang, how is the watchtower coming along?"
"Village Chief, don't underestimate us old bones!" Uncle Zhang patted the tower structure. "The timber is the best hardwood available; it’s sturdy enough. It will be finished in two more days."
"Thank you for your hard work," Li Chuan nodded, then asked, "Have the outpost rotations been arranged?"
"Everything is set," Uncle Zhang replied. "The young people in the village are especially eager; they insisted on taking their turns."
Li Chuan smiled slightly. "It’s good that the young have this enthusiasm, but outpost duty requires not just patience, but vigilance. Make sure to select the right people for the shifts."
Elsewhere, Lanna was giving a tactical briefing to the patrol team.
"Look here," Lanna said, pointing to the map drawn in the sand. "This is the perimeter of our village. The patrol route is divided into three sections. Each route requires a team of two, rotating at set times to ensure every corner is covered."
"What if we spot the enemy?" Liu Wang raised his hand to ask.
"Signal immediately; never act alone," Lanna said sternly. "Remember, we are not fighting in isolation; the strength of the village is your greatest support."
The intensity of the training gradually increased, but the team members had no complaints; instead, they were full of fighting spirit.
A month later, the fishing village's defense system had begun to take shape.
The coastal watchtowers stood tall, and the torches at the outposts flickered like stars in the night. The patrol teams departed on schedule, ensuring the safety of the village and its surroundings.
In the large square at the village entrance, Li Chuan stood before the newly completed fortifications to address the entire village.
"Today, our fishing village is stronger than ever before," he said, his voice ringing out. "This is not my achievement alone, but the result of everyone's joint efforts."
The villagers erupted into thunderous applause, and many had tears in their eyes.
Lanna stood beside him and whispered, "You really did it—you’ve united the entire village into a single force."
Li Chuan nodded. "But this is far from enough. The enemy we face is craftier and more difficult to deal with than the pirates."
After the celebration ended, Li Chuan returned to his room alone and took out the map brought back by the reconnaissance team, studying it repeatedly.
"Xie Tonghai was just a pawn. Who is the merchant behind all of this?" he muttered to himself. "What is his objective? Is it control over trade, or a greater ambition?"
Just then, Lanna pushed the door open and placed a cup of hot tea before him.
"Still thinking about the next step?" Lanna asked.
Li Chuan nodded. "Although the village's defense system has been built, I can't help but feel the enemy won't let it rest."
Lanna smiled. "That is what makes you different from others. Ordinary people would be satisfied with the victory in front of them, but you are already preparing for the future."
"Defense can only solve immediate needs," Li Chuan said quietly. "If we don't take the initiative, we will be worn down by the enemy sooner or later."
Lanna pondered for a moment. "Perhaps we should secure more allies."
A glint of light flashed in Li Chuan’s eyes. "You mean, unite with other fishing villages?"
"Exactly," Lanna nodded. "The power of a single village is always limited. If we can get the surrounding villages to join us, we can form a much stronger collective defense system."
Li Chuan fell into deep thought, and after a moment, he made up his mind. "Fine, let's do it. We will start visiting the nearby villages tomorrow and convince them to join the joint defense plan."
"I hope they listen," Lanna smiled. "After all, this cooperation is beneficial to everyone."
"Don't worry," Li Chuan said firmly. "As long as we show our sincerity, they will surely agree."
Early the next morning, Li Chuan set off with Lanna and several core patrol members to visit the nearby fishing villages.
Li Chuan understood that getting other villages to join the joint defense system would not be easy. In the past, most of these villages operated independently, each with their own rules. To facilitate this alliance, he had to show them clear benefits while dispelling their doubts.
The first stop was Xiling Fishing Village, the closest to Li Chuan’s own, with a population of about three hundred. The villagers were primarily deep-sea fishermen, and the village chief, Wang Degui, was an experienced old hand.
"Li Chuan?" Wang Degui put down his pipe and looked the young man over. "I heard you defeated the pirates. Are you here to show off your achievements?"
Li Chuan smiled. "Village Chief Wang, showing off is not my intent. I am here to discuss cooperation."
Wang Degui raised an eyebrow. "Cooperation? Xiling has always been self-sufficient; I haven't heard of anything we need to cooperate on."
"Village Chief Wang," Lanna spoke up at the right moment, her tone gentle. "We are here because we hope to form a collective defense system with the surrounding villages. You must have heard about the threat of the pirates, right? Although we repelled one wave, they could return at any moment."
The smile faded from Wang Degui's face. "The pirates are indeed a nuisance. But Li Chuan, to be honest, even if we encountered them in Xiling, we might not fight to the death the way you did."
"If you don't fight, what will they do?" Li Chuan stared at Wang Degui, his voice low. "They will plunder your grain, burn your boats, and even take your families. When that happens, will you still be able to be self-sufficient?"
This statement left Wang Degui silent.
Nearby, villagers whispered among themselves, "Village Chief, what Li Chuan says makes sense. What will we do if the pirates really come?"
Wang Degui pondered for a moment before saying slowly, "A joint defense is a good thing, but I need to see how it would actually work. I will consider your proposal."
Li Chuan nodded. "Village Chief Wang, I will give you plenty of time, but I hope we can reach an agreement soon. The enemy will not wait for us to be ready."
After leaving Xiling, Li Chuan and his group visited two other nearby villages—Nanwan and Shijiao.
The village chief of Nanwan, Li Quanhai, was relatively friendly. "Although Nanwan isn't large, we have always supported the idea of joint defense. As long as you provide a concrete plan, we are willing to join."
In contrast, Shijiao’s attitude was more hesitant. Village Chief Zhao Yuzhu was worried. "Li Chuan, the joint defense sounds good, but if the enemy comes, who will be the one to sacrifice? Our small villages likely cannot afford such a high risk."
"Village Chief Zhao, you are right," Li Chuan admitted candidly. "But it is precisely because our villages are small that we need to be united. If every village thinks it cannot afford the risk, then in the end, we will all be broken by the enemy one by one."
After some persuasion, Zhao Yuzhu finally agreed to consider it, but on the condition that: "If we are to join, we must see a specific division of labor and a clear distribution of interests among the villages."
Lanna understood this well. "That is only fair. We will discuss the details at the upcoming meeting to ensure that every village's interests are protected."
A few days later, representatives from the four fishing villages gathered in Li Chuan's village. It was the first official alliance meeting, and the atmosphere was both tense and filled with expectation.
Li Chuan stood before a makeshift sand table and went straight to the point. "The only purpose of today's meeting is to finalize the details of the joint fishing village defense system."
He picked up a twig and drew the locations of the four villages on the sand table. "Based on geography, we can divide the defense into three areas: coastal outposts, inland defensive lines, and emergency evacuation routes."
Wang Degui frowned. "How many people are needed for the outposts? What is the contribution expected from each village?"
"Each outpost needs at least five people on rotation," Li Chuan explained. "Our village has already built two outposts, and the other villages only need to construct theirs according to the same standards. As for personnel allocation, it can be decided based on the population ratio of each village."
"What about the defensive lines?" Zhao Yuzhu asked. "Does the inland line only require one main road?"
Lanna shook her head. "The inland terrain is complex, and a single line is easily breached. We suggest setting up multiple defensive positions at key locations, including simple wooden fences and traps."
The discussion lasted over an hour, ultimately resulting in a preliminary plan:
1. Outpost Construction: Each village is responsible for building one outpost and dispatching a fixed number of personnel for rotating patrols.
2. Resource Sharing: Fishing boats, grain, and weapons will be coordinated among the four villages to ensure sufficient defensive supplies.
3. Combat Command: Once an enemy invades, the joint defense will be under the unified command of Li Chuan, with each village dispatching forces to support.
After the meeting, Li Chuan proposed that the representatives of each village sign a covenant, marking the formal establishment of the fishing village joint defense system.
"This is not just for our village, but for our descendants," Li Chuan said. "If our generation can stand together in unity, the fishing villages of the future will never fear any threat."
Wang Degui sighed. "Kid, you really do have the aura of a leader. I hope you can lead us further."
Lanna handed the covenant to the village chiefs. "Sign it, and we will be one body."
When the final signature was placed, the villagers cheered, and the atmosphere of the village was more united than ever before.
However, just as Li Chuan was busy integrating the strength of the villages, an uninvited guest arrived at a secret stronghold on the East Coast.
"Master, the people in the fishing villages have united," a spy reported, kneeling on the ground.
The middle-aged merchant sitting in a wooden chair sneered. "Hmph, mere country bumpkins dare to dream of blocking my path? Truly ridiculous."
The spy asked cautiously, "What shall we do next?"
"Since they want to unite, let them know that unity is not omnipotent," the merchant said in a chilling tone. "Send word to the remnants of Xie Tonghai’s forces and tell them it is time to act."
The spy nodded. "Understood."
Meanwhile, Li Chuan and his allies remained unaware that a much larger conspiracy was brewing in the shadows.
