Chapter 51: Princess Lana's Decision
The spice and salt trade showed initial success, and the coastal economy gradually recovered, bringing a surge in Princess Lana’s reputation. The common people praised her as the "Orchid of the Sea," adorning this barren land like blooming flowers. However, behind all this, Lana knew that Li Chuan's contribution was indispensable.
One evening, Lana suddenly sent someone to invite Li Chuan to her residence. "Master Li Chuan, please do us the honor of attending tonight. Her Highness Lana has matters to discuss with you." The messenger's attitude was exceptionally respectful, hinting at some special arrangement.
Though slightly puzzled, Li Chuan agreed. He changed into proper attire and headed to Lana’s residence.
Lana’s residence was brightly lit, and the center of the grand hall was set with exquisite wine and dishes. Lana personally greeted Li Chuan with a gentle smile, "Master Li, please take a seat. Tonight is prepared for you."
Li Chuan looked somewhat surprised. "Your Highness is too kind. I have merely offered a modest contribution."
Lana shook her head. "No, your help goes far beyond 'modest.' Without you, our spiced salt might have remained an unfinished product, let alone penetrated the market. Tonight’s banquet is my expression of gratitude to you."
The banquet atmosphere was relaxed and harmonious. Raising her glass in a toast, Lana spoke with a hint of profound meaning, "Master Li, you once asked me why I am so devoted to this land. I think tonight is the time to tell you."
She paused, her gaze turning somewhat complex. "Though my family is noble, we carry our own responsibilities. My ancestors left a family precept: 'To protect the coastal people is the duty of our royal house.' This is not only our glory, but our mission."
Hearing this, Li Chuan nodded in response. "I have long felt Your Highness's care for the people. Because of this, I am willing to walk side by side with you."
Lana smiled faintly. "Since that is so, I should also let you know that the mission of my royal house requires not only conviction, but also substantial strength."
As the banquet drew to a close, Lana had a maid bring out an exquisite wooden box. She solemnly placed the box before Li Chuan and softly said, "Open it."
Li Chuan opened the wooden box to find a crystal-clear jade pendant resting inside. Carved with a lifelike swallow soaring on outstretched wings, the pendant seemed to harbor some mysterious power.
Lana explained, "This is our royal heirloom, the 'Swallow Pendant,' symbolizing the trust and reliance of the royal family. Legend has it that this jade pendant protects the wearer from danger, and it is one of my family's most precious tokens."
Li Chuan looked at the jade pendant in astonishment, his tone tinged with hesitation, "Such a precious item—how could I dare to accept it?"
Lana’s gaze was firm and sincere. "This is not an ordinary treasure, but a symbol of my gratitude and trust in you. Master Li, it is because of you that we were able to stabilize the situation and regain the support of the people. Please accept it as a testament to our profound cooperation."
Sensing Lana’s sincerity, Li Chuan fell silent for a moment before solemnly taking the jade pendant. He rose and bowed to Lana, "Since Your Highness places such trust in me, I shall not fail your expectations."
Lana smiled lightly. "With your support, I believe that no matter how many challenges lie ahead, we can overcome them together."
On this night, the relationship between Lana and Li Chuan entered a whole new phase. The gift of the jade pendant not only represented Lana's gratitude, but also symbolized her reliance and deep trust in Li Chuan.
However, in the darkness outside the residence, a pair of cold eyes watched all of this unfold.
"The jade pendant has actually fallen into his hands... It seems Lana’s trust in him runs much deeper than we anticipated." The figure sneered softly and quickly vanished into the night.
A new conspiracy was brewing, and this time, Li Chuan and Lana would face unprecedented trials.
The lights of Lana’s residence had yet to be extinguished, and as Li Chuan prepared to take his leave, he noticed Lana suddenly halt and her expression shift slightly.
"Your Highness?" Li Chuan sensed something was amiss and probed cautiously.
Lana did not answer. Instead, she quickly waved her hand, and the maids understood, promptly shutting the heavy doors of the banquet hall while fetching a map to spread across the table.
"Someone is prying in the shadows," she whispered, a hint of alertness in her voice.
Li Chuan’s gaze darkened. "It seems tonight’s events have caught the attention of certain people. Your Highness, does this jade pendant hold any special significance?"
Lana nodded, pointing her finger at a location on the map. "The pendant is a hereditary family token. It not only symbolizes trust, but is also an important signal for contacting external allies. Anyone who sees this jade pendant will know that the bearer represents the royal house of Lana."
Frowning, Li Chuan said, "With an item of such importance given to me, aren't you afraid someone might exploit it?"
Lana gazed at Li Chuan with unwavering eyes. "That is precisely why I chose you. Without absolute trust, I would never let it fall into anyone else's hands."
Before their voices had even faded, a commotion erupted outside the residence. Rapid footsteps echoed from the outer courtyard, immediately followed by a shrill scream.
Lana’s head of guards rushed into the hall, dropping to one knee to report, "Your Highness, unidentified assassins have infiltrated the residence and are currently engaging the outer courtyard guards."
"How many?" Li Chuan asked.
"At least ten. They are all highly trained killers with extremely agile movements," the head of guards replied swiftly.
Lana remained calm and composed. "Secure the inner courtyard. Under no circumstances are they to approach this area."
Li Chuan, however, shook his head and unhooked the saber at his waist. "Your Highness, if you stay here, you will only become their target. It would be better to break through with me and retreat via the side path."
Lana hesitated for a moment, but seeing Li Chuan's resolute gaze, she finally nodded. "Very well, I will follow your lead."
Li Chuan and Lana quickly slipped through the back door passage, retreating toward the path leading to the back mountain. However, the assassins seemed to have prepared in advance; several figures in black were already lying in ambush along both sides of the trail, crossbows aimed directly at the two of them.
"Look out!" Li Chuan shoved Lana behind a stone wall just as he met the assassins head-on. His saber flashed with cold light, deflecting two incoming bolts.
Sheltered behind the stone wall, Lana watched in astonishment at Li Chuan's agile movements. His saber technique was clean and decisive, every strike targeting vital points, and within moments he had beaten back two of the assassins.
"Your Highness, run!" Li Chuan shouted sternly, swinging his saber to block a sneak attack from a third assassin.
Lana quickly got to her feet and continued along the path. Yet at that moment, another assassin suddenly sprang from the flank, lunging straight toward her.
Without time to think, Li Chuan leaped forward to shield Lana with his body. His blade clashed against the assassin's dagger, sending a shower of sparks flying. However, the assassin's other hand concealed a poisoned needle, aimed straight at Li Chuan's shoulder.
"Careful!" Lana cried out, but it was already too late to stop it.
Struck by the poisoned needle, Li Chuan's face instantly paled, but he gritted his teeth against the searing pain and countered with a single slash, cutting down the assassin on the spot.
"Let's go!" He muttered through clenched teeth, supporting Lana as they continued their retreat toward the exit of the back mountain.
The two finally escaped to a clearing halfway up the mountain. The pursuing assassins were intercepted by the guards and temporarily held at bay. However, due to the poison taking effect, Li Chuan's steps grew increasingly unsteady. Using his last ounce of strength to escort Lana to safety, he collapsed onto the ground.
"Li Chuan!" Lana panicked as she helped him up, only to find his shoulder already swollen and blackened.
"The poison..." Li Chuan endured the agony, speaking through gritted teeth. "Don't worry about me. Go back quickly and rally defenses; I fear this is a diversion."
Lana shook her head, an unprecedented firmness in her tone. "I will not leave you behind."
She swiftly tore off her own sleeve to bandage Li Chuan's wound, pulling a porcelain vial from her robes. "This is a secret family medicine. It should temporarily suppress the poison."
She sprinkled the powdered medicine onto Li Chuan's wound and carefully fed him a pill. Soon, Li Chuan's complexion eased somewhat, though he remained too weak to move.
With the assassins repelled, the guards arrived successively, escorting Lana and Li Chuan back to the residence. Yet, the harrowing experience of this night drew the two of them even closer together.
Lying on the bed, Li Chuan looked at Lana with complex eyes. "Your Highness, why were you so stubborn today? If any harm had come to you, how could I have faced the common people?"
Lana smiled faintly, a touch of tenderness in her eyes. "Li Chuan, do you know that in my eyes, you are not merely a partner, but a friend, and even..." She paused, leaving the second half unsaid, yet leaving the air thick with an unusual emotional undercurrent.
"Thank you for blocking that arrow for me," Lana said softly. "From now on, no matter what difficulties we face, I will confront them together with you. This jade pendant is a symbol of trust and carries my promise."
Hearing this, Li Chuan felt a jolt in his heart. He gazed deeply at Lana and nodded. "Since that is the case, I, Li Chuan, will never let Your Highness's trust go to waste."
The two fell silent for a moment, both pondering the road ahead. Although the immediate danger had passed, they both understood that the true crisis was only just beginning.
The next morning, news regarding the mastermind behind the assassins reached Li Chuan. As he had anticipated, the attack was tied to the internal power struggles within Lana's family. The enemy sought not only to seize the jade pendant, but also to bring Lana down completely.
Upon receiving the report, Lana said calmly, "Since the enemy has already made their move, we can no longer afford to sit passively."
Li Chuan nodded. "Your Highness, I will deploy the defenses as soon as possible and assist you in investigating internal vulnerabilities. But to ensure your safety, I need you to agree to one thing."
"What is it?" Lana raised her eyes to look at him.
"No matter what happens in the future, please trust me, and please do not put yourself in danger again," Li Chuan said firmly. "Your safety concerns not only the future of your family, but the destiny of all the coastal people."
Lana contemplated for a moment before finally nodding in agreement. "Very well, I promise you."
At this moment, the two were not merely allies, but trusted comrades-in-arms. Their fates were tightly intertwined, and the road ahead was destined to be fraught with thorns.
