Chapter 63: The Two Looked at Each Other and Smiled
The sky was gloomy, and low-hanging clouds nearly enveloped the entire valley in a dim twilight. Li Chuan and Lanna were leading a squad of guards along rugged mountain paths, patrolling the defensive lines outside the fishing village. This was a routine inspection aimed at confirming the progress of the new policies along the coastal defense lines and within the fishing village. Li Chuan's mind remained preoccupied with the reforms in the village; during this period, his cooperation with Lanna had grown increasingly seamless, gradually resolving many tricky problems. However, just as they penetrated deep into the mountains, fate suddenly altered its course.
The procession moved forward slowly as the path ahead grew increasingly uneven. Slippery stones and mud slowed their pace. Several guards carefully forged a path ahead, while Lanna, guided by Li Chuan, followed closely behind. She wore simple riding attire; although unaccustomed to such rugged mountain terrain, she maintained her composure with steady steps.
"Your Highness, just ahead is the temporary outpost we set up. We can take a brief rest there," Li Chuan said, turning back to Lanna with a gaze full of concern.
Lanna nodded slightly, her fatigued expression vanishing instantly as she forced herself to remain calm. "Thank you, Li Chuan. Walking for so long has indeed left me somewhat tired."
The two walked side by side at the rear of the procession, occasionally exchanging notes on navigating the mountain path. The surrounding scenery was quiet and serene, occasionally broken by the distant chirping of birds. Yet right at that moment, a sudden disturbance shattered the tranquility.
Out of the corner of his eye, Li Chuan caught movement deep within the dense forest. He immediately grew alert. "Everyone, be careful! There might be enemies!"
Before his voice faded, several masked mountain bandits suddenly rushed out from all directions, rapidly surrounding their team. With the appearance of the bandits, the sudden attack shattered all peace.
Quick-witted, Li Chuan instantly drew the longsword at his waist and commanded the guards to prepare for battle. "Protect the Princess! Form a defensive line immediately!"
However, the bandits' assault was fierce and lightning-fast. It seemed they had prepared in advance, instantly suppressing the defenders' reaction capabilities. Li Chuan and a few guards fought desperately to fend them off, but wave after wave of enemy attacks made their squad appear somewhat inadequate. Standing to one side with a solemn expression, Lanna was unskilled in combat, yet she knew clearly that she had to remain calm through this breakout and prevent the team from losing its direction.
"Li Chuan, we need to find a breakthrough!" Lanna said in a deep voice, determination flashing in her eyes.
A resolute gleam appeared in Li Chuan's eyes. "We will find one, we just need time."
The battle grew increasingly tense. Although the bandits were not numerous, their intimate familiarity with the mountain forests allowed them to utilize tactics with ease. To make matters worse, the rugged mountain trails prevented rapid movement, plunging their team into a relative disadvantage.
An idea suddenly occurred to Lanna. "Li Chuan, we cannot keep consuming our strength like this. We must find a place to hide temporarily."
"You are right," Li Chuan judged swiftly, leading the team to retreat along a hidden mountain trail. They crossed a patch of jungle and headed straight for a cave. Situated halfway up the slope, this cave possessed a moderate depth; if they could successfully conceal themselves within, they should be able to evade the bandits' pursuit.
"Hurry up, everyone, maintain formation!" Li Chuan commanded in a low voice, his expression tense yet composed. Behind him followed Lanna, her gaze focused as she constantly scanned the surroundings for any movement.
However, the bandits did not easily give up. Seeing them attempt to flee into the cave, several thugs immediately lunged forward, trying to block the entrance. Growing alert, Li Chuan swung his sword to drive one thug back before pulling Lanna into the cave.
"Your Highness, hide in here first!" Li Chuan pulled Lanna hurriedly into the cave, knowing well that their only option at the moment was to hide temporarily and wait for the enemy's vigilance to wane before seeking a chance to break through.
Drawn into the cave by Li Chuan, Lanna flashed a trace of worry in her eyes. "Li Chuan, with so many bandits outside, how long can we hold out?"
"We will hold out," Li Chuan's tone was filled with conviction. "As long as we stay calm, we will find a way."
Once inside, the two temporarily breathed a sigh of relief. The cave entrance was obscured by several massive boulders, and the rain outside had washed the mud and stones around the entrance into a slippery mess, preventing the bandits from easily detecting their position. Yet Li Chuan knew that this was no safe haven; they could only hide temporarily and wait for an opportunity.
However, as night deepened and the rain grew fiercer, the dampness inside the cave added to their oppressive feeling. Lanna gently wiped the sweat from her forehead; prolonged marching and combat had drained her physical strength. Looking around, she found the atmosphere inside the cave growing heavier, and a deep sense of isolation and danger began to envelop them.
"Li Chuan, what should we do?" Lanna asked softly, knowing that in such extreme environments, they had to rely on wisdom and composure rather than sheer force alone.
Li Chuan remained silent for a moment, took a deep breath, and spoke in a calm tone, "We must wait. Wait until the bandits' vigilance slackens, and wait until they lose track of our whereabouts."
Lanna nodded, a trace of resolve flashing in her eyes. "We will wait."
The two waited quietly inside the cave, the air thick with tension. Despite the difficult situation, their mutual understanding and trust bound their hearts tightly together.
"I know you will definitely protect me well," Lanna suddenly spoke, her voice low and sincere. "You have always been doing your utmost to protect me."
Li Chuan was slightly startled. He turned to look at Lanna and saw in her eyes no longer the simple arrogance of nobility, but a deep reliance and trust.
"You protected me, too," Li Chuan said softly. "We are partners."
At that moment, time seemed to stand still, and all crises and predicaments were temporarily cast aside. Only their mutual trust securely bound their two hearts together. In the dimness of the cave, they silently gazed at each other, and the unspoken emotion between them quietly took root.
Yet the ordeal was far from over. The rain outside continued to pour, and the bandits' movements remained unpredictable. The coming night would be their most severe test.
That night, the rain poured like waterfalls, the air inside the cave grew increasingly humid, and the chill was piercing. Li Chuan and Lanna sat quietly in a corner of the stone cave, leaning against the rock wall to block the cold wind. Thunder rumbled outside, filling the valley with an oppressive weight, as if the entire world were forcing them to make a choice. Li Chuan kept glancing at the cave entrance, remaining constantly vigilant against any movement from the bandits. Lanna occasionally coughed softly; the dampness made her body uncomfortable, yet she uttered no complaints and maintained her composure.
"How are you feeling now?" Li Chuan asked suddenly, turning a concerned gaze toward her.
"I'm fine," Lanna smiled faintly. Though she did not want Li Chuan to worry excessively, the slight frown on her brow revealed that her physical strength was nearing its limit. "I am just not very accustomed to staying in a cave for such a long time."
Sensing her exhaustion, Li Chuan nodded and said gently, "Let's rest for a moment. The situation outside is still unclear, and the bandits have made no moves; perhaps they are still searching elsewhere."
"Mm," Lanna nodded, closing her eyes to rest and recover.
Yet, even though the two snatched a moment of brief rest, the silence within the cave felt all the more unsettling. Li Chuan tightly gripped the short sword at his waist, ready at a moment's notice to handle any eventuality. He knew that although the bandits were only a small faction, they were familiar with the terrain, making escape no easy task.
At that exact moment, a faint sound suddenly drifted from the cave entrance. Li Chuan's alertness spiked instantly as he leaped to his feet. He whispered to Lanna, "Careful, there might be movement."
Lanna rose immediately, quickly drawing close to Li Chuan. The two instinctively squatted down, fixing their eyes on the entrance. The patter of raindrops hitting the rocks masked almost any ambient sound. However, as footsteps drew closer, both could sense that the enemy was slowly approaching their hiding place.
Li Chuan's heartbeat accelerated. He whispered, "The enemy may have discovered our location. We can no longer wait."
Lanna nodded, nervous yet still calm. "We must leave this place as quickly as possible. We cannot let them trap us here."
"Yes," Li Chuan replied in a low voice, calculating their next move.
Silently, they retreated deeper into the cave, quickly analyzing the surrounding terrain. The passage within was not wide, but it could accommodate two people moving agilely. Li Chuan decided to use the twists and turns of the cave to confuse the enemy, leading Lanna away through another hidden exit.
"Stay close to me, and make sure not to make a sound," Li Chuan instructed Lanna softly.
Without hesitation, Lanna followed closely behind. The two quietly traversed the slippery cave walls, rapidly groping their way toward the other end. Just as they cleared a curving rock alcove, the footsteps outside grew closer, and they could even hear the murmurs of several bandits talking amongst themselves.
"They are hiding right in here, don't let them run!" a hoarse voice roared in a low, anxious tone.
Li Chuan and Lanna exchanged glances, their hearts nearly stopping. The enemy was getting closer and closer; if they remained in the cave, their whereabouts would inevitably be exposed.
"Hurry!" Li Chuan suddenly grabbed Lanna's hand, swiftly leading her through an inconspicuous trail to break out toward the other side of the cave.
Moving like ghosts, the two advanced rapidly, making almost no sound at all. Finally, behind a massive boulder, they found a narrow exit. It was a natural fissure, easily overlooked by most people, yet just wide enough for two individuals to squeeze through.
"Go!" Li Chuan commanded softly, climbing out of the fissure first.
Lanna followed closely behind. Though her experience on mountain paths was limited, she trusted Li Chuan and marched forward in his steps. At last, they found a relatively safe spot on the other side of the cave and stopped to catch their breath.
Outside, the torrential rain continued, and the mountain forest was filled with the scent of dampness and earth. Li Chuan crouched down, carefully surveying the surroundings to ensure no bandits were in pursuit.
"It looks safe for now," Li Chuan whispered.
Lanna took a deep breath, her face slightly pale, but she remained composed. "Li Chuan, thank you."
Li Chuan did not answer, keeping his vigilant gaze locked on the surroundings. "We cannot let our guard down now. The bandits will likely continue tracking us, and we must find a safe evacuation route as quickly as possible."
"You are right," Lanna nodded, her eyes resolute.
Next, the two carefully crossed the mountain forest, minimizing noise and avoiding leaving any traces. In this unfamiliar forest, they had to rely on the terrain and their respective wits to find a way out.
Daylight gradually faded, and the mountain wind grew fierce. The rain continued to fall relentlessly, soaking their clothes entirely and sending chills creeping across their bodies. Even so, Li Chuan and Lanna did not relax their vigilance, maintaining high alertness and cooperating closely in their actions.
Finally, after a day of arduous trekking, they successfully evaded the bandits' pursuit. Via a hidden trail, they emerged from the forest and returned to the previously established safe zone. There lay a relatively hidden camp where Li Chuan and Lanna could temporarily recover their strength and reassess the situation.
The two stopped walking and looked at each other. Although exhausted, this trial of life and death seemed to have solidified their bond. Having experienced this sudden crisis, both Li Chuan and Lanna knew deep down that when facing unknown hardships, their mutual trust and coordination would become their strongest backing.
"Li Chuan, thank you," Lanna's voice finally softened, her eyes filled with gratitude and trust.
Li Chuan smiled faintly and patted her shoulder. "You protected me, too."
Though physically and mentally drained, the two smiled at each other.
