Chapter Twelve: The Truth Revealed
Qu Wanqing turned back abruptly, but saw only the bustling crowd; the dark figure had vanished without a trace.
"Could my eyes have been playing tricks on me?" she wondered, yet that nagging sense of unease refused to dissipate.
Jiang Yu scanned their surroundings, his expression grave. "Be careful, Wanqing. I fear this place is no longer safe."
Following the newly discovered leads, Qu Wanqing and Jiang Yu delved deeper, peeling back layers of mystery like unraveling silk. They discovered that the crisis surrounding the remarriage was no mere domestic rivalry; behind it lurked a mysterious organization. This group wielded immense power, its reach extending throughout the court and the countryside, and its true purpose was chilling.
Qu Wanqing’s expression hardened. She understood the danger this organization posed. The noise of the temple fair seemed to fade away, leaving her in a world of her own, the tension within her providing a sharp contrast to the festive atmosphere.
"It seems we have poked a hornet's nest," Qu Wanqing whispered, a hint of excitement in her voice. This was the thrill she craved!
Sensing her investigation, the mysterious organization quickly dispatched assassins to deal with her. Several dark figures wove through the crowd, targeting Qu Wanqing and Jiang Yu. The killers were swift, their strikes lethal, and the pair found themselves in immediate danger. Yet, they showed no fear; their eyes were resolute as they prepared to meet the challenge.
Sensing the threat, onlookers fled in panic, plunging the scene into chaos. The atmosphere reached a breaking point. Jiang Yu shielded Qu Wanqing, meeting the assassins’ attacks with calm precision. He moved with agility and sharp technique, darting through the crowd like a hunting leopard. Qu Wanqing utilized her own keen perception of danger, anticipating the attackers' moves and dodging with grace.
"Jiang Yu, the temple fair is particularly exciting tonight, isn't it?" Qu Wanqing laughed as she sidestepped a blow.
Jiang Yu gave a helpless smile. "Wanqing, how can you still be in the mood for jokes at a time like this?"
"Why be nervous? When soldiers come, we block; when water comes, we earth-cover. Surely you aren't afraid of them?" Her eyes sparkled with confidence. Surveying the complex environment of the fair, she saw both a challenge and an opportunity. A plan quickly took shape in her mind.
"Jiang Yu," she whispered into his ear, "do this..." After a few whispered words, a cunning smile touched her lips.
"Understood, let's pull a reversal!" Jiang Yu caught on immediately. With a swift movement, he lured the assassins toward a crowded ring-tossing stall.
"Wanqing, are you sure this 'King of Qin circling the pillar' maneuver will work?" Jiang Yu asked loudly while dodging a throwing dart, not forgetting to toss a hoop and perfectly snagging a cloth tiger.
"Trust me, it's a sure thing!" Qu Wanqing hid behind a candied hawthorn stall, observing the assassins' movements. Seeing the perfect moment, she lunged out, the skewer from the candied hawthorns flying like an arrow at the attackers. Just before she threw it, she kicked over a nearby clay figurine stall. As the clay figures scattered, the assassins slipped and fell, caught completely off guard.
"Good grief! Is this lady playing Nezha?" a bystander who hadn't managed to flee exclaimed in shock.
The assassins had clearly underestimated her strength and were thrown into disarray as they scrambled to dodge the flying skewers.
"Is that all? Is that really it?" Qu Wanqing darted through the crowd, mocking them. "With skills like yours, I doubt you could even beat the dancing grannies in the square!"
Furious but helpless, the assassins were outplayed. Qu Wanqing used the setting of the temple fair to set trap after trap, holding them in the palm of her hand. She cleverly used the passing dragon dance troupe to entangle the attackers, eventually subduing them. From their belongings, she retrieved a key piece of evidence: a jade pendant engraved with a mysterious symbol.
"Citizens!" Qu Wanqing held the pendant high, standing on a raised platform. Her gaze swept over the crowd with determination, her voice clear and resonant as the sunlight bathed her in an aura of justice. "This pendant is the ironclad proof that a mysterious organization is plotting to subvert the court through the remarriage crisis!"
The crowd erupted into an uproar, buzzing with discussion. Qu Wanqing seized the opportunity to expose the conspiracy and identify everyone involved. With the truth revealed and justice served, the onlookers cheered for her wit and bravery.
"This plot twist is more exciting than the soap operas next door!" one woman exclaimed excitedly.
"Miss Wanqing is truly a woman who bows to no man!" an older gentleman added, giving her a thumbs-up.
Standing in the center of the crowd, Qu Wanqing basked in the praise, secretly delighted. She knew she was the most dazzling presence at the fair.
Jiang Yu stood silently to the side, watching her spirited demeanor. His heart hammered like thunder, his gaze locked on her face, which glowed with the radiance of victory. His mind was a mess, a surge of emotions roiling within. He knew that at this moment, he could no longer suppress his love, which was erupting like a volcano. Driven by an invisible force, he walked slowly toward her. He was about to speak, but a sudden, urgent sound of hoofbeats interrupted him.
Amidst the swirling dust, a troop of riders galloped up. The leader shouted, "The eldest daughter of the Qu household, receive the imperial decree!"
Qu Wanqing frowned slightly, a sense of foreboding rising within her.
As the dust settled, the rowdy fair began to return to calm. Qu Wanqing looked around, a surge of heroism in her heart. She had won! She had not only overcome the crisis but also won the hearts of the people.
Jiang Yu stared at her, his eyes sparkling with brilliance. He had imagined fighting alongside her countless times, but never had he dreamed it would be so thrilling, so... heart-stirring.
Unable to contain his surging love any longer, he swept Qu Wanqing off her feet in front of the gathered crowd and, to her utter astonishment, kissed her soft lips.
"Wow!" The crowd erupted, whistles and cheers filling the air.
"I’ll take this dog food!" someone shouted, while others egged them on, "Do it again! Again!"
Qu Wanqing was stunned for a moment, then responded with equal fervor. The sudden kiss was as spectacular and dazzling as the fireworks at the fair. In this moment, she was neither a villain nor a master of deduction, merely an ordinary woman lost in love. Amidst the blessings of the crowd, she and Jiang Yu stood hand in hand. They exchanged a smile, leaving everything unsaid. This was not just a sublimation of their love, but a symbol of them embarking on a new chapter together.
However, happy times are always fleeting. Just as she was basking in the joy, a fast rider galloped up, the sound of hooves shattering the peace of the fair. The rider dismounted, clutching an imperial decree, and proclaimed, "By the grace of the Emperor, the eldest daughter of the Qu household is gifted in wit and talent; she is specially invited to attend the palace banquet three days hence..."
A palace banquet?
Qu Wanqing’s heart tightened. This sudden invitation carried a scent of danger. She instinctively squeezed Jiang Yu's hand, and he responded with a look of firm resolve.
"Wanqing, do not fear. I will be with you always," Jiang Yu whispered.
Qu Wanqing took a deep breath, a confident smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Fear? What a joke! What storms haven't I weathered? It’s just a banquet—who's afraid of whom?"
Three days later, as night fell and the lanterns were lit, a carriage rolled slowly toward the imperial palace, stopping before the grand, golden gates. The curtains parted, and Qu Wanqing and Jiang Yu stepped out together.
"Let's go," she said with a radiant smile at Jiang Yu. "Let’s go meet the monsters and demons at this banquet!"
