Chapter 49: The Truth Seeks to Surface
The clinic's assistants had never witnessed such a spectacle and hesitated to step forward for a moment.
Amidst the standoff, Jiang Yu stepped in front of Qu Wanqing, his gaze as sharp as a knife. "Who dares touch her!" Although he did not practice martial arts, his imposing aura was second to none, resembling a fiercely protective husband overflowing with maximum boyfriend energy.
Doctor Li's face turned ashen as he roared in anger, "Rebellion! Absolute rebellion! Get them, all of you! Throw them out!"
Gathering their courage, several assistants swarmed forward, poised to strike.
Amidst the pushing and shoving of the crowd, the hem of Qu Wanqing's dress was slightly ruffled, yet her gaze remained resolute, devoid of the slightest hint of retreat.
She was by no means some delicate ancient maiden; she was a bona fide, rebellious little firecracker!
"Hold on!" Qu Wanqing suddenly shouted, her tone carrying an eerie calmness. "I know your secret!"
As soon as these words fell, the entire room was struck dumb.
Even Doctor Li froze, a flicker of panic flashing across his previously gloomy face.
The other physicians and apothecary boys in the clinic stopped what they were doing and looked toward Qu Wanqing with curiosity.
Taking advantage of the moment, Qu Wanqing steadied her stance, took a deep breath, swept her gaze across the crowd, and curled her lips into a cold, queen-like smirk. "I saw..." She intentionally paused, her eyes scanning their doubtful and fearful faces before finally resting on Doctor Li. "In your dispensary..." Qu Wanqing parted her crimson lips, spitting out a few words that crashed like thunder: "...I saw you refining medicine with human blood!"
The moment she said this, absolute silence enveloped the room, so quiet one could hear a pin drop.
Doctor Li's face turned instantly pale, tiny beads of sweat oozing across his forehead. The previously placid depths of his eyes finally cracked, and a trace of terror flickered within them.
"Nonsense!" Doctor Li recovered first, roaring with a blustering fierceness, though his conviction was clearly lacking, making him look very much like a clown whose lies had been exposed.
The surrounding assistants, physicians, and apothecary boys broke into a massive uproar, unable to believe what they were hearing. Although they knew the clinic harbored certain oddities, they never imagined anything so horrifying.
Seeing this, Qu Wanqing felt a wave of secret satisfaction.
Hmph, honey, I am a woman who has seen fierce winds and great waves; what is a little scene like this?
She raised an eyebrow, her tone full of disdain. "Whether it is nonsense or not, you know best in your heart. I am not one of those easily duped ancient damsels in distress. You think you can dismiss me with a few lies? Not a chance in hell!"
She extended a slender, delicate finger and pointed toward a tightly shut door—the very dispensary she had broken into earlier. "Every single medical prescription in there reeks of a fishy stench, and those jars used to hold medicines are clearly stained with aged blood clots!" She paused, her gaze sharpening. "What do you take those patients for? Your raw ingredients for medicine manufacturing? Simply inhuman!"
Realizing his lies had been dismantled, Doctor Li's complexion grew even uglier. He took a deep breath, forcefully suppressing the panic in his heart, and said with a sinister edge, "Very well, this old man is indeed refining medicine. But I am not using human blood; rather, I am using special medicinal ingredients formulated as a catalyst, all for the sake of saving lives. What do you know?"
He attempted to cover up the truth with falsehoods, whitewashing himself under the guise of a benevolent healer.
Qu Wanqing sneered coldly, her eyes growing even sharper. "Saving lives? Ha, saving lives with human blood? All I see is you murdering people! The pulse condition of patient Zhao is clearly the sign of long-term blood loss, and what about those mysterious men in black who keep showing up? How do you explain that?"
Her speech was rapid, logically sound, and every word hit the mark like sharp blades piercing through Doctor Li's disguise.
At this moment, Jiang Yu's gaze was filled with profound admiration for Qu Wanqing.
He knew his judgment had not failed him; this woman was not only breathtakingly beautiful but also possessed a high IQ—she was a born queen.
The surrounding people in the clinic were also awed by Qu Wanqing's imposing manner, and the looks they directed toward her were tinged with a hint of reverence alongside shock.
Qu Wanqing scanned the crowd, a meaningful smile playing at the corners of her lips. "Doctor Li, do you really think you can muddle through this? The truth is not something you can hide just because you wish to. And what I saw is far more than that..." Before her voice trailed off, she suddenly cast her gaze toward a certain corner, her eyes growing deep and piercing. "...Furthermore, what is that concealed compartment over there?"
As soon as Qu Wanqing finished speaking, everyone followed her line of sight, noticing an inconspicuous hidden compartment in the corner indeed.
Doctor Li's expression shifted drastically; he knew everything was over.
He lunged fiercely toward the hidden compartment, attempting to destroy the contents within, only to be intercepted by Jiang Yu's lightning-fast reflexes.
"Doctor Li, where are you off to in such a rush?" Jiang Yu blocked his path with an ambiguous smile, his tone tinged with mockery, embodying the quintessential black-bellied persona.
Doctor Li struggled, yet he could not break free from Jiang Yu's iron grip.
Sweating profusely with anxiety, he watched as Qu Wanqing approached the concealed compartment, his heart feeling like an ant on a hot pan.
Qu Wanqing walked up to the hidden compartment, gave it a gentle push, and it sprang open in response.
Inside lay a thick booklet with a weathered cover that seemed to date back quite a few years.
She picked up the booklet, gently blew away the dust on its surface, and slowly opened it.
As the pages of the booklet turned one by one, Qu Wanqing's expression grew increasingly solemn.
The booklet recorded various secrets of the clinic, among which was glaring evidence connecting the clinic to her second-marriage crisis!
As it turned out, everything was orchestrated behind the scenes by someone whose sole purpose was to ruin her reputation and force her into accepting a second marriage!
"Oh? So it was you all along!" Qu Wanqing slammed the booklet shut violently. Holding the booklet, she turned to face Doctor Li, her tone freezing. "Doctor Li, what else do you have to say for yourself now?"
Doctor Li turned deathly pale, knowing he had nowhere left to run.
He slumped limply to the ground, his eyes hollow like a vessel stripped of its soul.
The surrounding people whispered amongst themselves upon witnessing this scene, filled with shock and anger at the clinic's misdeeds.
Jiang Yu walked over to Qu Wanqing, gently holding her hand, and gave her a reassuring look.
Qu Wanqing smiled back, her heart filled with gratitude and warmth.
At that very moment, everyone suddenly realized that Miss Bai was nowhere to be found!
"Where is she?" Apothecary Boy Sun cried out in alarm.
