Volume One, Chapter Six: Saving a Life!
The two powerful demons exchanged a glance, then lowered their heads.
“Yes, Lord Demon King!”
Watching his subordinates depart, Li Yan walked over to the window, his mind replaying the scenes from earlier that day when he entered the city.
He was quite curious.
Why would Bai Ziye, who had always despised humans, be with a human woman?
He took out a pill he had purchased from that woman.
Li Yan poured one into his palm.
The pill was no bigger than a fingernail.
What surprised him was that the seemingly insignificant pill bore faint golden cloud patterns entwined upon it.
He took out another bottle and poured more pills into his palm.
They were all the same!
All of them were top-grade pills!
Only top-grade pills bore the cloud patterns.
What puzzled Li Yan even more was that, despite his keen eyesight, he couldn’t identify what kind of pill it was!
Pinching a pill between two fingers, he hesitated for a moment.
Then, Li Yan swallowed the pill.
It melted instantly in his mouth.
A vast surge of life force flooded into his body!
The curse that had tormented him for a thousand years showed signs of being alleviated!
This pill!
Li Yan quickly took the remaining pills and consumed them.
Sure enough, the curse within him was suppressed!
Though only temporarily.
But it gave Li Yan hope that the curse might be broken.
The curse had been left by the ancestral shaman of the Wuku tribe.
A thousand years ago, the Wuku tribe was exterminated by the demon clan.
Their ancestral shaman had sacrificed his life to cast a curse upon him!
That curse tormented him every full moon night, making life unbearable.
He had tried countless methods but never succeeded in removing it!
Who exactly was that woman?
Li Yan’s eyes grew deep and thoughtful.
For the first time,
he felt genuine curiosity about a human woman.
And the full moon was just three days away!
If the pills this woman made could truly ease his suffering,
he wouldn’t mind capturing her and bringing her to the demon clan!
Recalling the woman’s stubborn gaze,
Li Yan thought he could pay her a visit.
A woman capable of refining such exquisite pills was no ordinary person!
With this thought,
Li Yan turned around, his demonic armor transforming into simple clothes, and even his appearance subtly shifting.
This way, no one would recognize him.
Li Yan gave a sinister smile.
With a flash, he vanished without a trace.
...
In the small courtyard, Qing Yi had already set up the animal traps.
She brushed the dust off her palms, feeling quite satisfied.
These traps were laid out with great success!
Even she had forgotten where exactly she placed them.
Qing Yi believed this was the highest art of setting traps!
Hong Luan felt restless, fluttering her wings as she landed on the water tank. “Master, you’ve set so many traps—what exactly are you trying to do?”
By the pond, Xuan Ling poked out half his body. “Maybe it’s to prevent someone from stealing you!”
Hong Luan blinked in confusion.
Xuan Ling didn’t elaborate.
Her master was always hoping Hong Luan would lay eggs to sell for money.
In her master’s heart,
Hong Luan was the future pillar of the family.
So it made sense to be afraid she might be stolen!
Feeling uneasy, Qing Yi picked up Hong Luan and placed her back in the chicken coop.
If that yellow-furred creature dared to come to her home again, she would make sure it never left!
“Bang!”
A sudden noise came from the direction of the courtyard gate.
Qing Yi panicked slightly and grabbed a wooden stick.
The fiercest “beast” she had ever encountered was a mangy wild cat.
Her homemade dried fish had been stolen multiple times.
Qing Yi had battled it with cunning.
Only when all her dried fish was completely gone did she manage to drive the wild cat away for good!
But this yellow-furred creature was more cunning!
And it even stole chickens!
Her hens were her lifeline.
She had raised them fat and healthy!
Even when hungry, she only secretly dreamed about how delicious it would be to stew one.
But she had never truly dared to cook them!
She was counting on her hens to lay eggs and hatch chicks.
Chicks would lay eggs too!
That way, she’d have a constant supply of eggs!
Now, she would never give an inch to a yellow-furred creature!
So Qing Yi focused all her energy.
She absolutely would not let it succeed!
At the moment the courtyard gate made a sound,
Hong Luan’s eyes instantly sharpened.
“Demons!”
“They’re hiding deeply; they seem to be deliberately masking their aura.”
Several divine beasts in the courtyard communicated silently.
They weren’t afraid of their master encountering danger.
With them protecting her,
there were almost no creatures in this world that could truly harm their master!
Actually, there was no such thing!
Qing Yi, holding the wooden stick, suddenly opened the door and rushed out.
The yellow weasel was nowhere to be seen.
In front of the door lay an unconscious man.
“Hey, what’s wrong with you?”
Qing Yi put down the stick and bent over.
The man’s face was pale, his breath shallow, as if he could perish at any moment.
What to do?
Qing Yi struggled with her expression.
She was still an unmarried young woman.
Bringing a man home could easily spark rumors and unpleasant gossip.
But life was paramount.
Qing Yi couldn’t bear to abandon this man.
Leaving him here overnight,
his body would likely be cold by morning.
She sighed.
Her father had said,
“Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda!”
Moreover, she was somewhat of an herbalist herself.
Qing Yi dragged the man back into her courtyard and quickly shut the door.
Just as she stepped inside,
“Click!”
Li Yan, who was pretending to be unconscious, twitched his brows twice but did not wake.
Qing Yi was momentarily stunned.
Looking down,
she saw a large animal trap firmly clamped onto the man’s backside.
“Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to!”
Though she knew the man couldn’t hear her, she kept apologizing.
Frantically, she opened the trap and continued dragging the man inside.
“Click!”
“Click, click.”
Qing Yi: “...”
Li Yan: “!!!”
In the chicken coop, Hong Luan laughed uproariously, rolling around.
The willow tree in the corner swayed its branches as if chuckling.
Only Bai Ziye, clutching a bone, stared fixedly at the man with eyes full of caution and unease.
Li Yan!
Though Li Yan had changed his appearance and aura,
this bastard could be recognized even if he turned to dust!
Had he already discovered her?
Bai Ziye’s eyes glinted fiercely.
But he knew that even if he acted, he wouldn’t stand a chance!
He didn’t dare to flee either.
If his guess was wrong, running away would expose his whereabouts.
So he was gambling!
Betting that he hadn’t been exposed!
Li Yan struggled several times, tempted to wake.
He wondered if this woman had seen through him and was deliberately toying with him!
The small courtyard was less than twenty meters wide.
He had fallen into six animal traps!
Qing Yi had struggled greatly but finally dragged the man onto her wooden bed.
Seeing no wounds where the trap had clamped him,
Qing Yi was furious.
The trap was a fake!
Ignoring the trap for now, Qing Yi sat on the edge of the bed and grasped the man’s wrist to take his pulse.
Her delicate face furrowed and relaxed intermittently.
“Ah, it’s kidney yin deficiency, but it’s not a serious illness. So, where exactly is the problem?” she muttered softly.
She didn’t notice the man on the bed had already turned ashen.
