Chapter 15: Her Smile Brighter Than the Sunlight
The shop assistant apologized and, feeling embarrassed and unable to save face, snorted and hurried away. The others, intimidated by Jiang Jingming’s presence, also dispersed.
“Comrades, thank you.”
“Thank you, sister.”
The mother and daughter expressed their gratitude to Sang Yu.
Sang Yu waved her hand dismissively. “It’s nothing, no need to thank me.”
After thanking her, the mother and daughter left.
“How did you two end up here?” Sang Yu finally had a chance to ask.
Jiang Jingming replied, “We came to buy some things. Have you eaten yet?”
Sang Yu shook her head. “Not yet.”
“Then let’s eat together.”
“Alright.”
It happened that Sang Yu was also about to have a meal.
Watching their unabashed conversation, Song Jiajia grew displeased.
“Cousin, you’re buying so many things. You’re not using Jiang’s—your brother-in-law’s money, are you?” she said, adopting a lecturing tone. “Cousin, I didn’t want to say anything, but—”
“Don’t say it if you don’t want to,” Jiang Jingming cut her off coldly.
Sang Yu had wanted to see what hypocritical words Song Jiajia would come up with, but Jiang Jingming interrupted before that could happen.
“Money is meant to be spent. She is my wife; it’s only right that she spends my money.” Jiang Jingming’s gaze was icy as he looked at Song Jiajia.
Then he turned to Sang Yu. “Let’s go eat.”
Sang Yu raised an eyebrow, smiled slightly at Song Jiajia, then beamed warmly at Jiang Jingming. “Alright.”
Lin Wen looked meaningfully at his captain. So the captain had a protective side when it came to his wife. That was something no one would have guessed.
But it was clear the captain really cared for his little sister-in-law. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have specifically called Lin Wen out to buy her the big four household appliances. Just now, Lin Wen had seen a look in the captain’s eyes—besides tenderness, there was admiration.
Well, that was understandable; Sang Yu’s words earlier had been quite impressive.
Lin Wen followed closely behind Jiang Jingming, leaving behind a scowling Song Jiajia and a lovestruck Lu Ting.
Indeed, from the moment Jiang Jingming appeared, Lu Ting’s eyes never left him. It was a pity he belonged to Sang Yu.
Song Jiajia seethed with resentment. In their previous life, Jiang Jingming had never defended her like he did today, let alone treated her with such kindness.
Though Jiang Jingming had given Song Jiajia money every month, he had treated her like a stranger.
Seeing Sang Yu’s triumphant expression just now only fueled Song Jiajia’s anger.
But their time wouldn’t last long; in less than a month, Jiang Jingming would die. Then she could see how proud Sang Yu would be.
Jiang Jingming brought Sang Yu to the state-run restaurant.
“What do you want to eat?” he asked.
“I’m fine with anything. You all decide,” Sang Yu replied.
Seeing she had no intention of ordering, Jiang Jingming took the initiative and placed the order himself.
The three sat by the window on the second floor.
Jiang Jingming and Sang Yu sat facing each other, with Lin Wen beside Jiang Jingming.
“This is for you,” Jiang Jingming said, pulling a box from his pocket.
Curious, Sang Yu opened it to find a watch.
“A watch? You got this for me today?” she looked at him in surprise.
Lin Wen quickly chimed in, “Yes, sister-in-law. Our captain specially called me out today to buy you the big four appliances. He also wanted to get a washing machine, but they were out of stock and it’ll take a few days to arrive. Sister-in-law, this is the first time I’ve seen our captain so attentive.”
Lin Wen looked at Sang Yu with a suggestive smile.
Sang Yu examined the watch inside the box—it was exquisite and beautiful, a BJ brand, and looked expensive.
“Thank you.” She curved her beautiful eyes into a gentle smile. At that moment, a ray of sunlight streamed through the window, casting light upon her face.
Her profile bathed in sunlight, her smile was even more dazzling than the sun itself.
At that moment, Jiang Jingming’s heart pounded fiercely.
He abruptly stood up, drawing curious glances from Sang Yu and Lin Wen.
Feigning calm, Jiang Jingming said, “I’ll go check if the food is ready.”
With that, he strode away.
Lin Wen scratched his head, thinking the captain seemed like a young boy today.
Sang Yu didn’t think much of it and put on the watch. She had been planning to buy herself one anyway, but Jiang Jingming had beaten her to it.
She decided to wait until she earned her next manuscript fee to buy him a gift.
“Sister-in-law, what do you think of our captain?” Lin Wen suddenly asked.
“He’s pretty good,” Sang Yu answered objectively.
So far, he truly was.
Lin Wen smiled. “Of course, our captain is great. Sister-in-law, let me tell you, he was amazing in the military…”
When Jiang Jingming returned, he saw Lin Wen chattering away while Sang Yu listened intently.
Jiang Jingming found the scene somewhat uncomfortable and quickly approached them.
“Captain, you’re back,” Lin Wen greeted with a smile.
Sang Yu’s gaze rested on Jiang Jingming. Lin Wen had been telling her about the captain’s military days, including the dangerous missions he undertook.
He had transferred out because he was accidentally shot during one such mission.
Such perilous events seemed routine to Lin Wen.
Noticing Sang Yu’s gaze, Jiang Jingming asked awkwardly, “What’s the matter?”
Sang Yu smiled. “Nothing.”
Soon after, the waiter brought the dishes.
Sang Yu realized they were all her favorites.
She glanced at Jiang Jingming. They hadn’t shared many meals together, had they? Maybe just last night?
Yes, last night she had cooked according to her own preferences.
She curved her lips and lowered her head to eat.
After lunch, with nothing else to do, Sang Yu prepared to leave.
Jiang Jingming escorted her home first.
“If anything comes up, call me.”
Sang Yu smiled. “What could possibly happen at home?”
Jiang Jingming pressed his lips together. “I’ll be off then.”
“Okay, take care.”
“Mm.”
After parting ways with Sang Yu, Jiang Jingming and Lin Wen headed to the police station.
On the way, Lin Wen couldn’t help but say, “Captain, you can’t be so cold toward the ladies.”
Watching Jiang Jingming’s attitude toward Sang Yu, Lin Wen felt anxious.
Jiang Jingming remained silent.
Lin Wen knew he was being heard; otherwise, Jiang Jingming would have told him to shut up by now.
Lin Wen continued, “Captain, you have to be gentle with the ladies, talk to them more, and show more care. Ask what they’re eating, if they’re comfortable, if they need anything. We have to care for the women. I really think sister-in-law is wonderful. Captain, you must hold on to her.”
Suddenly, Jiang Jingming asked coldly, “Do you have a girlfriend?”
It was like a sharp sword piercing Lin Wen’s chest. He looked wounded. “I’m opening my heart to you, and you stab right through it!”
