Chapter 12: Layers of Mist
Kale, Allen, and the woman wove through the dense forest, moonlight filtering patchily over them. The air was moist and the surroundings silent, as if awaiting an unforeseen twist. Though they had distanced themselves from the shadow beasts, an intangible oppression still weighed heavily on Kale’s heart. The wolfish instinct within him grew ever stronger, each breath carrying a surge of hidden power that seemed increasingly at odds with his body.
Allen walked ahead, eyes often reflecting curiosity about the forest, while the woman remained vigilant, constantly alert to any movement nearby. Kale glanced back frequently, his mind growing heavier with doubt and unease.
“Kale, shouldn’t we find a place to rest?” the woman’s voice broke the silence.
Kale looked at her, hesitation flickering in his eyes before he nodded. “We need to rest for a while. Tonight’s battle drained much of our strength.” He stopped and surveyed the area. “This place should be safe. Let’s stop here.”
The woman nodded and began clearing a small patch of ground. Kale crouched to wipe his short blade, the image of the silver wolf lingering persistently in his mind. Its appearance had saved them, yet only deepened the mystery. Why had it come at this moment? Who had sent it? Kale sensed a greater power orchestrating everything from the shadows.
Allen sat on the ground, gazing at Kale’s back, then suddenly asked, “Brother, why do we keep encountering so many monsters? We were only looking for a safe place.”
His voice carried weariness and helplessness.
Kale did not answer immediately. Slowly turning, he sat beside Allen and ruffled his hair. “Danger and challenges walk with us in this world, but as long as we hold hope in our hearts, we will reach the end.”
Allen blinked, seeming to understand somewhat yet not fully. He leaned quietly against Kale and closed his eyes to rest. Kale’s gaze was deep and restless.
Night fell, thick fog permeating the air, the moonlight nearly obscured.
Lost in thought, Kale was abruptly alerted when the woman stood, her eyes sharp with caution. “Something’s wrong here.”
Kale sprang up and scanned the surroundings swiftly. The trees appeared distorted, twisted as if warped by some force. The fog thickened, solidifying around them, isolating them from the outside world.
“Smog?” Kale whispered.
“This is a mist,” the woman said solemnly. “This forest is shrouded in mystery, but the mist is the most terrifying. It disorients travelers and allows malevolent creatures to enter your world.”
“What do you mean?” Kale frowned, unease flickering within.
“We’re trapped,” she said softly. “This mist not only obscures direction but also lets enemies in the forest track our scent.”
“Enemies?” Kale’s heart accelerated, sensing something silently closing in.
Suddenly, strange whispers pierced the fog, drifting from all directions—distant, eerie, and chilling. Allen snapped awake, clutching Kale’s hand tightly, eyes full of fright. “Brother, I hear voices…”
A shudder ran through Kale. “Don’t be afraid, Allen. Close your eyes and see nothing,” he murmured, drawing his short blade as his alertness surged.
The whispers grew clearer, suffused with a suffocating pressure.
“Do you hear that?” the woman’s voice trembled. “Are those… human voices?” She looked at Kale, suspicion and wariness in her eyes. “Someone’s tracking us.”
“We must leave,” Kale’s gaze hardened, unwilling to wait any longer. He stepped into the mist, the woman and Allen following closely.
No matter how far they went, the whispers clung to their ears—deep, ancient, and sinister, as if an evil force silently approached.
Suddenly, a strange figure flickered in the fog, making Kale’s heart leap.
He spun around, spotting the vague silhouette shimmering with an eerie light. Tightening his grip on the short blade, he whispered to the woman, “Be careful, there’s an enemy.”
She drew her blade, ready to fight, while Allen trailed trembling behind, fear evident but powerless.
Kale halted, tense and unwavering. “Show yourself. You can’t hide anymore.”
At his command, the figure emerged—a pale-faced young man with a cold, deathly expression. His worn cloak was tattered, scars marred his face, and his lips moved in low whispers—the very voices they had heard.
“Who are you?” Kale’s voice was icy, blade raised slightly.
The man slowly lifted his head, eyes glowing with strange light. “Who am I? Ha. You don’t need to know. By trespassing here, you’re destined to become part of us.”
“Us?” Kale’s heart tightened as he stared sharply. “What exactly are you?”
“We are the guardians of the mist,” the man said in a low, sinister tone. “The power of this forest has awakened. Any intruder becomes part of it—its prey.”
Before the words ended, the man’s form twisted violently, transforming into a swirling black mist that lunged at Kale. Kale swung his blade fiercely, the sharp edge slicing through the air, but the black fog dissipated as though it had no true form.
“To kill me, you’ll need that skill first,” the man’s voice echoed again, seeming to come from all around, growing closer.
Kale’s eyes gleamed coldly as he charged forward, blade flashing through the air, colliding fiercely with the dark mist.
“Be careful, Kale!” the woman shouted, though she could not stop his recklessness. She drew her blade, ready to fight by his side.
Just as Kale neared the black mist, a silver light streaked through the air. The silver wolf reappeared before them, growling low as it leapt toward the dark mass.
“That’s it!” the woman exclaimed in surprise.
The wolf and black mist intertwined, unleashing a dazzling radiance that instantly illuminated their surroundings. The black fog writhed violently, crushed by an irresistible force, letting out a piercing scream before vanishing into the air.
The silver wolf returned to its original form, growled softly, and glanced back at Kale.
Kale’s chest tightened, finally exhaling in relief. He knew they had escaped danger for now, though his unease lingered. He looked at the wolf, gratitude and questions mingling in his heart.
“Thank you,” Kale whispered.
The wolf growled again, as if responding.
“We must keep moving.”
Taking a deep breath, Kale turned and walked deeper into the mist, the woman and Allen following. The silver wolf vanished once more into the darkness, as if it had never appeared.
The forest remained ominous and forbidding. In the depths of the mist, even darker secrets seemed to lie hidden.
