Chapter Fourteen: A Melodramatic Twist

Xu Yi knew nothing about cars. He had once been nothing more than a penniless college student, and after getting his driver’s license in his sophomore year, he had never touched a car again.
Unlike most men, Xu Yi regarded cars as nothing more than a means of transportation. He had no particular attachment to any brand.
So when he left, Xu Yi hailed a taxi and, on the driver’s recommendation, went to the nearest 4S dealership.
It was nearly noon.
As soon as Xu Yi entered the dealership, he glanced around. It was not very large, with seven or eight cars displayed on the showroom floor.
A fairly attractive female salesperson sat behind a desk, playing on her iPhone. When she saw Xu Yi enter, she stood up and looked him over from head to toe before sitting back down and returning to her phone, showing no intention of serving him.
Xu Yi frowned and took the initiative to approach her.
“Hello. This is my first time visiting the dealership, and I’d like to buy a car. Could you recommend something?”
The saleswoman looked up at him and replied with polite but obvious indifference, “You can look around the showroom first. Once you’ve found a car you like and decided to buy it, just let me know.”
Xu Yi frowned in displeasure. “If you don’t recommend anything, how am I supposed to know which model I need?”
Yet the saleswoman remained unmoved.
“I’m sorry, sir, but every display vehicle has an information sheet beside it describing its performance. You can look at them yourself first. Or you can search online for the kind of car you want. Once you’ve decided that you really intend to buy one, you can come back and find me.”
Xu Yi narrowed his eyes. Only then did he realize that she thought he lacked the means to make a purchase and was deliberately brushing him off.
He looked himself over.
He was wearing a simple gray T-shirt, a pair of black trousers, and an ordinary pair of canvas shoes. There was no jewelry or watch around his neck or on his wrists.
Everything he had on cost less than five hundred yuan altogether. He looked every inch the stereotypical nobody.
No wonder the saleswoman had paid him no attention.
Xu Yi shook his head with a self-mocking smile. Although he was dissatisfied, he had no intention of wasting time proving anything to her.
He had come to buy a car, not to show off.
After thinking it over, Xu Yi followed her advice and walked over to the display area, examining the cars one by one.
Just as he was inspecting the vehicles, the hurried sound of high heels striking the floor rang out. A long-legged beauty in a professional suit rushed into the dealership, carrying several takeout containers and sweating profusely.
Xu Yi turned his head curiously and could not help taking a second look.
The woman was truly dazzling. Her smooth brown hair cascaded like a waterfall over her fair shoulders.
Her face was like a piece of exquisitely carved jade, and her delicate features seemed to have been drawn by an artist. Beneath her high, elegant nose were lips as alluring as bright cherries, touched with pale lipstick that made them even more captivating. Perhaps because she had run all the way there, her skin glowed faintly pink beneath the showroom lights.
On top of that, her figure was astonishingly voluptuous, with a prominent bust and shapely curves. Combined with her professional suit, the effect was breathtaking.
The outfit was so tight that it almost looked like a bodysuit.
Any normal man would have taken a second look at such a beauty.
Xu Yi naturally considered himself a normal man.

“Sis Ping! Everyone! I’m sorry—I’ve brought your lunch.”
The long-legged beauty placed the takeout containers in front of the saleswoman, then turned her head and called several times toward the back of the dealership.
“Zeng Lili! What on earth were you doing? I only asked you to buy us lunch, and you took this long? Do you know what time it is? I’m only getting to eat now! I’m starving to death!”
The saleswoman who had been addressed as Sis Ping immediately began berating her without the slightest courtesy.
“I’m… I’m sorry! The restaurant you specifically asked for was incredibly busy, and I had to wait in line for ages. That’s why…”
Zeng Lili froze and hurriedly tried to explain.
“Hmph!”
Her coworker ignored her, picked up the food, and walked toward the back.
As she went, she said coldly, “The manager came by earlier to check attendance. You weren’t here, so you were marked as leaving early.”
“What?” Zeng Lili grew anxious. “I didn’t leave early! I went to buy lunch for all of you!”
“Hey, Zeng Lili, don’t make things up. Did we ask you to buy lunch for us? You were the one who volunteered, weren’t you?”
At that moment, three more impeccably made-up female salespeople emerged from the back of the dealership.
One of them immediately contradicted Zeng Lili after hearing her words.
Another added, “Exactly! Besides, who knew you’d be gone for an hour just to buy lunch? For all we know, you went off to slack around and left us here to work. Getting caught by the manager is your own fault.”
Zeng Lili’s face flushed bright red. She hurriedly protested, “I wasn’t slacking off! I didn’t leave early!”
“Oh, then you didn’t. So why are you shouting? If you’ve got the nerve, go shout at the manager. What does shouting at us prove? It’s our turn to take a break now, so you can watch the shop yourself.”
The four women glanced at Zeng Lili impatiently and contemptuously before carrying their lunch toward the back of the dealership.
As they walked, they deliberately made no effort to lower their voices.
“What is she putting on airs for? Look at her, acting all seductive. Who knows who she went off to flirt with.”
“Exactly! Ever since she started working here, the manager has been coming around every day. We can’t even slack off anymore. She’s made our lives miserable.”
Their remarks were clearly filled with jealousy and slander.
Zeng Lili’s face burned with embarrassment. Even Xu Yi, standing some distance away, heard every word.
At that moment, Zeng Lili also noticed that Xu Yi was the only customer in the showroom. She quickly tidied her appearance.
Then she walked over to Xu Yi with a professional smile, bent slightly, and apologized.
“I’m sorry, sir. We disturbed you while you were looking at the cars. Is there anything I can help you with?”
When Zeng Lili bent over, the impressive curves beneath her blouse became even more pronounced, drawing the eye almost irresistibly.
Xu Yi forcibly restrained himself from activating the see-through vision in his left eye, nodded, and said, “Yes. I need a car, but I don’t know much about them or what would suit me. I need someone to give me some advice.”
Zeng Lili nodded. “Then could you tell me what you’re looking for in a car, sir?”
Xu Yi replied calmly, “It needs plenty of horsepower. Fast acceleration, stable handling, and enough strength to crash through anything in its way.”
Zeng Lili paused, then asked, “Do you have a preferred brand?”

Xu Yi shook his head.
Zeng Lili asked another question. “May I ask what your budget is?”
“My budget?” Xu Yi thought for a moment. He had more than five million yuan, which would be enough to buy both a car and a house.
Given the current housing prices in Donghai City, three million yuan would be enough to buy himself a decent secondhand home.
“Under two million,” Xu Yi replied.
“Two… two million?”
Zeng Lili’s cherry lips parted in astonishment, as though she suspected she had heard him wrong.
Xu Yi said calmly, “What? Are you worried I can’t afford it?”
Zeng Lili hurriedly shook her head. “Ah! No, no! It’s just that this is the first time I’ve met someone with such a high budget, so I was startled.”
Xu Yi was taken aback. This girl was certainly frank.
After thinking for a moment, Zeng Lili said, “Sir, based on your requirements, most SUVs priced between three hundred and six hundred thousand yuan should meet your needs. Of course, there are also more expensive SUVs, including some that cost nearly two million.”
“If budget isn’t a concern, I suggest that you look at every model and take each one for a test drive. Once you’ve experienced them for yourself, you’ll know what kind of car you want.”
Xu Yi nodded in satisfaction. “That sounds like a good idea. In that case, let’s follow your suggestion and start with the cars around three hundred thousand yuan.”
“Of course, sir!”
Zeng Lili was delighted as well.
She had not closed a sale in a long time. Even if the man in front of her bought only a three-hundred-thousand-yuan car, she would still receive a commission of five thousand yuan.
At the thought of the commission, Zeng Lili’s eyes immediately lit up.
She became even more enthusiastic as she introduced the cars to Xu Yi.
Just as Xu Yi was immersed in the process of choosing a vehicle, a familiar voice pierced his ears like a sharp thorn.
“Xu Yi? It’s really you! What, are you here looking at cars too? Don’t tell me you actually think you can afford one here?”
Xu Yi turned his head.
His ex-girlfriend, Zhao Yating, and her best friend, Liu Mei, were standing not far away. Beside them stood a tall man dressed in a white suit.
Liu Mei was the one who had exclaimed upon seeing him. The disdain on her face made Xu Yi frown.
Running into his ex-girlfriend—what kind of melodramatic coincidence was this?
Xu Yi’s mood instantly soured. The moment he saw Zhao Yating, all those unpleasant memories came rushing back, leaving him feeling sick as though he had swallowed a fly.
“None of your damn business,” Xu Yi said coldly to Liu Mei.
