Chapter Four: The East Sea Gang

Li Zhengdong shook his head, frowning. “I’m not sure. They all had their faces covered and it was a sneak attack... They were so fast, I didn’t get a good look. The police said the nearby surveillance cameras just happened to be broken...”
“But...” He paused thoughtfully, then said, “I heard them mention one word.”
“What word?”
“The East Sea Gang.”
“The East Sea Gang?” Xu Yi was puzzled. Having lived in Donghai City for over a decade, he had never heard of such a gang.
No! Just because it’s called the East Sea Gang doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a gang; it might just be the name of an organization. Could this group be connected to his own kidnapping and the attempt on his life?
Xu Yi fell into deep thought.
“Hmph! Whether it’s the East Sea Gang or the Axe Gang, if it weren’t for the sneak attack, I, Li Zhengdong, would have beaten them to the ground!”
Li Zhengdong’s teeth ground with hatred, clearly still bitter about having been caught off guard this time.
Then, suddenly remembering something, he glared at Xu Yi and shouted, “Almost forgot! What’s going on with you? Where have you been these past three days? Donghai Middle School told me you never showed up to register! After all the trouble I went through to find you a job, why didn’t you go?”
“Uh?” Xu Yi snapped back to reality but didn’t know how to answer.
He didn’t want to lie to Li Zhengdong, but he also dared not reveal that he had been kidnapped and nearly killed three days ago.
At this moment, Li Mengjing stepped forward to defuse the situation, rolling her eyes at her father with a hint of annoyance. “It’s all because of you. If you hadn’t unfairly expelled Xu Yi, he wouldn’t be forced to become a middle school sports teacher now. He’s a national first-level athlete, you know.”
“Bah! Whose fault is that? The national team selection is coming up, and in front of so many people, this kid flagrantly broke the rules and started a fight! He wasn’t expelled from school, only the martial arts team, and that’s only because of my reputation!” Li Zhengdong’s eyes widened as he spoke with righteous indignation.
Then he turned to Xu Yi angrily. “Xu Yi! I don’t care what you think. Whether you don’t want to be a teacher or you look down on Donghai Middle School, you promised me you’d go there. You must register and start work! A person must keep their word, understand?”
Li Mengjing was so exasperated she was at a loss for words, about to speak again.
Xu Yi stopped her quickly. “Teacher, please don’t be angry! It’s not that I don’t want to go... It’s just that an accident happened three days ago. I promise I’ll go to Donghai Middle School to register.”
Hearing Xu Yi agree, Li Zhengdong finally breathed a sigh of relief and began to drone on again. “That’s better. Xu Yi, actually sending you to Donghai Middle School as a teacher is for your own good. You’ll understand once you’re there.”
Xu Yi quickly nodded in agreement.
Although Li Zhengdong kept talking, Xu Yi didn’t feel impatient at all. Having just narrowly escaped death, he deeply understood how precious family ties were.
It was then he noticed that Li Zhengdong seemed much older—although in his fifties, his temples were streaked with gray, making him look like a man in his sixties.
Xu Yi knew it was due to overwork.

The two of them stayed and chatted with Li Zhengdong a while longer. Perhaps because of his injuries and the surgery planned for the next day, he soon grew tired and fell into a deep sleep.
Once outside the ward, Li Mengjing asked curiously, “Xu Yi, why did you stop me just now? Why wouldn’t you let me talk about Wu Zhiyong’s situation?”
Xu Yi shook his head. “Teacher is having surgery tomorrow. Telling him now would only worry him. After all, Mr. Li has already made many enemies among the school’s upper management because of me. And Wu Zhiyong’s father just happens to be a member of the school board...”
Li Mengjing’s expression grew anxious. “So what now? Does that mean Dad staying at the school is too dangerous? Maybe he should just resign.”
Xu Yi shook his head. “That would play right into Wu Zhiyong and the others’ hands. Besides, Mr. Li has devoted half his life to the martial arts team. Why should he quit?”
“But still...” Li Mengjing’s face was full of worry.
“Jingjing, this all started because of me. Leave this to me. I promise you, give me one month and I won’t let anyone harm Mr. Li or you. Do you trust me?” Xu Yi turned and grasped Li Mengjing’s shoulders earnestly.
Her cheeks flushed bright red as she looked at him up close, feeling a heat rush through her body, her legs growing weak.
“I... I trust you,” she whispered, barely audible.
Xu Yi didn’t notice her sudden change. He took out his phone and transferred fifty thousand yuan to Li Mengjing’s account.
“All right, Jingjing. During this time, you and Mr. Li don’t have to worry about a thing — just focus on recovering. Take this fifty thousand yuan and buy whatever you need. I’ve got some business to attend to. I’ll come see Mr. Li again in a few days.”
After giving these instructions, Xu Yi left the hospital.
...
Xu Yi felt a strong sense of urgency because he clearly realized that the forces he would soon face were unknown to him until now.
Being penniless, his only option was to quickly accumulate strength and then proceed carefully.
He had given all 150,000 yuan he won from the scratch cards to Li Mengjing. Now, after being beaten up, he was back to having only 800 yuan.
However, for someone with his clairvoyant ability, 800 yuan was enough to invest.
Outside the hospital, Xu Yi pulled out his phone and quickly began scanning all the lottery shops in Jiangtai District on the map app before taking action.
This time, to increase his chances of winning, Xu Yi didn’t just buy one scratch card at each shop. Whenever he saw a card with a prize, he would immediately buy it.
Statistically, not every shop had high-value prize cards, and many mostly offered low-tier prizes.
So to improve efficiency, Xu Yi couldn’t afford to pass up any prize-winning scratch cards.
Of course, to save time on claiming prizes, whenever the prize exceeded the taxable amount, Xu Yi still sold the winning tickets to shop owners, who would redeem them. Given a profit margin, no shop owner would refuse such a deal.

All day long, Xu Yi went without eating or drinking, visiting 25 lottery shops in total.
He won a total of 500,000 yuan in prizes! Averaging about 20,000 yuan per shop, after taxes and paying the shop owners’ cut, Xu Yi ended up with 450,000 yuan in hand!
Though not a huge sum, Xu Yi was very satisfied.
Because this money was earned so effortlessly! His initial excitement had long since faded into calm composure.
For most people, the lottery was a thrilling, unpredictable game.
But for Xu Yi, walking into a lottery shop was like walking straight to an ATM — so easy it was almost boring.
“People say gambling on jade is a gamble between ruin and fortune, all about the thrill. I wonder how I’d feel if I tried gambling on jade now?”
Xu Yi couldn’t help but wonder.
But thinking aside, actually participating in jade gambling wasn’t that simple.
Donghai City didn’t produce jade. He had no connections or channels to get into the jade gambling circles. To participate, one needed significant capital.
Furthermore, Xu Yi only had clairvoyance; he knew nothing about jade. Even if he studied hard, it wouldn’t be quick.
As for the jade sold in jewelry stores, it had already been appraised by experts and priced very high, leaving no chance to find a bargain. Even if possible, it would be time-consuming and unsuitable for Xu Yi’s current situation.
In contrast, scratch cards were the right way to use his clairvoyance to earn his first pot of gold.
“Let’s aim to make 500,000 today!”
Glancing at the darkening sky, Xu Yi set a small goal for himself and prepared to enter the 26th lottery shop.
But as soon as he stepped inside, he immediately felt the intense, greedy gazes of six men sweeping over him.
Xu Yi’s heart skipped a beat; he instantly realized he was being watched.
“Hey, kid! Heard you won a ton of scratch cards today. Almost none of them lost. How’d you do it? Teach your old pals?”
A punk with spiky yellow hair leered at Xu Yi maliciously.
Five others stood beside him, rising to their feet.
Without hesitation, Xu Yi turned and ran!
