Grandfather and grandmother eagerly awaited the visits of their granddaughter. As she grew older, her personality became increasingly similar to Wen Jiu’s, which delighted the couple immensely—it was like seeing Wen Jiu’s childhood all over again, irresistibly adorable. Wen Can inherited Wen Jiu’s gentle and sweet nature. She rarely displayed strong emotions, but whenever she encountered something she liked or disliked, it was plainly written on her face. Most of the time, her expression mirrored Wen Jiu’s and Gu Zehuai’s—calm and aloof.

Gu Zehuai looked at this miniature version of Wen Jiu, with an expression identical to the photos in the album, and his affection for his daughter deepened even more.

After dinner, the family took a short walk before returning home.

The three of them stayed at the Wen residence that night. After Gu Zehuai gently put their daughter to sleep in her crib, he carried Wen Jiu to the big bed. Wen Jiu immediately sensed something was amiss—Gu Zehuai was surely up to something again.

“Jiu Jiu, it’s been so long since we’ve...,” Gu Zehuai said plaintively.

Indeed, since the arrival of their daughter, the time the two of them spent alone had visibly diminished. Every time, Gu Zehuai would “mournfully” tease Wen Jiu.

Wen Jiu was speechless.

Gu Zehuai coaxed her, “Jiu Jiu, Mom and Dad are on the second floor, we’re on the third. Just keep your voice down. Don’t you want to? Would you want to see me so miserable?”

Wen Jiu, half-dazed, was led along by Gu Zehuai. One had to admit, a man long deprived of intimacy was truly formidable.

But Wen Jiu was no longer the innocent girl who would blush easily. No matter what Gu Zehuai did, she responded in kind, and the experience was mutually satisfying.

Wen Jiu lowered her voice, afraid of waking their daughter, but was soon silenced by Gu Zehuai’s lips.

They didn’t stop until the early hours of the morning, when Wen Jiu pleaded for mercy. After a quick wash-up, they embraced and fell into a deep sleep.

———

Time flew by swiftly. Wen Can was now three and a half years old and ready to start kindergarten.

On the first day of school, Gu Zehuai and Wen Jiu reluctantly accompanied their daughter to her classroom, reluctant to leave her behind.

But the little girl seemed to have entered a new world. Surrounded by so many peers she had never seen before, Wen Can’s eyes sparkled with excitement, almost forgetting that her parents were still nearby.

“Sweetheart, do you like kindergarten?” Wen Jiu asked, a little wistfully, but Wen Can was too enthralled to notice.

“Yes! Mommy and Daddy, I love it here!”

Though reluctant, Wen Jiu understood that kindergarten was beneficial for her daughter’s growth. She crouched down, kissed her daughter’s rosy cheek, and reminded her, “Baby, do you remember what Mommy and Daddy told you last night? You have to be good at kindergarten, listen to your teachers, and get along nicely with the other children, okay?”

“I know, Mommy. I will,” Wen Can replied, then kissed Wen Jiu back.

Gu Zehuai added with a vague tone, “Also, don’t get too close to the boys.” He wouldn’t allow anyone to covet his daughter at such a young age—hmph.

The little girl didn’t quite understand what he meant and looked at him with some puzzlement.

Wen Jiu gently turned her daughter’s face toward herself. “Our baby will be good, right? Mommy and Daddy believe in you.”

Wen Jiu wasn’t worried—for their daughter was clever after all.

After settling her daughter into her seat, Wen Jiu finally convinced herself that children had to grow up.

Gu Zehuai felt the same way. Since their daughter’s birth, he had scarcely been apart from her all day. Even on workdays, he always came home for lunch to be with his wife and daughter.

Suddenly being without her for a whole day was hard to bear.

But he understood that this was an inevitable part of their daughter’s growth.
