Chapter 48 The Gu Family Tradition: Men Cook
Wen Jiu nodded, but only said, "Wait a moment," before heading into the living room, leaving the door open behind her.
Soon, Wen Jiu came out holding her phone and explained, "I'll come over to your place and help you out."
Gu Zehuai smiled and nodded, "Alright."
He recited a string of numbers and said, "Jiu Jiu, this is the front door code. Later, I'll add your fingerprint."
While Wen Jiu entered the code, she pretended not to understand, "Why would you add my fingerprint?"
Gu Zehuai replied plainly, "What do you think?"
The two shared a knowing look.
Although Gu Zehuai agreed to let Wen Jiu help, he didn't actually let her do much.
"It's so cold—don't touch the water. Leave this to me. Go play in the living room," he said.
After picking some vegetables, Wen Jiu went to the living room.
Gu Zehuai was highly efficient; in less than an hour, he had prepared four dishes and a soup.
Wen Jiu took a photo of the meal, and then, when Gu Zehuai was off guard, snapped a candid shot of him.
Gu Zehuai was suddenly called by Wen Jiu, and just as he looked up, she pressed the shutter.
In the photo, Gu Zehuai’s figure was tall, his gaze clear, with an innocent, slightly bewildered air.
Wen Jiu felt her heart struck in an instant.
Gu Zehuai realized what had happened and smiled, "Jiu Jiu, you actually took a candid shot. Then I should take one of you, too."
He raised his phone, pretending to take a picture of Wen Jiu.
She hurriedly covered her face with her phone and protested, "No, your photography skills must be terrible. I won't let you take my photo!"
After she spoke, Wen Jiu peeked from behind her phone at Gu Zehuai, only to see he had already put his phone down, smiling at her.
"I was teasing you. If you don’t want me to take your picture, I won’t. When you’re willing, I’ll ask again."
With the topic dropped, the two sat down to eat.
Only then did Wen Jiu remember to ask, "How are you so good at cooking? Did you study it specially?"
Gu Zehuai replied with a smile, "It's a family tradition—the men cook. After doing it so many times, you learn."
Wen Jiu nodded, showing she understood.
Then Gu Zehuai added, "So, Jiu Jiu, why don’t you consider me?"
Under Gu Zehuai’s expectant gaze, Wen Jiu reluctantly replied, "Let’s talk about it later."
After dinner, as usual, Gu Zehuai washed the dishes.
When everything was tidied up, he asked Wen Jiu if there was any movie she wanted to watch.
Wen Jiu thought for a moment; there wasn’t any genre she particularly liked, so she casually suggested, "A comedy."
Gu Zehuai nodded and then said, "Later, I’ll take you somewhere."
Wen Jiu pressed him for details, but Gu Zehuai kept it mysterious.
Once they had rested enough, Gu Zehuai drove Wen Jiu to a certain place.
Soon, the car stopped in the underground garage of another villa complex.
Seeing Wen Jiu’s confusion, Gu Zehuai explained, "I have a house here. There's a small theater inside."
Wen Jiu hadn’t expected to watch the movie in a home theater, but thinking about it, it seemed more atmospheric.
Before entering, Gu Zehuai took Wen Jiu’s hand and recorded her fingerprint.
After they finished, they opened the door and went inside.
It was a standalone villa, similar in size to Wen's house, but the interior style was different.
Here, the decor was reminiscent of Gu Zehuai’s apartment—minimalist, with subdued colors.
Gu Zehuai showed Wen Jiu around and then led her to the top floor.
On one wall was a large screen, almost cinema-sized, and the spacious room made watching movies even more immersive.
Wen Jiu named one of her favorite classic comedies, and Gu Zehuai went to search and start the screening.
