Chapter 92: Keeping the Appointment
The sender was so obvious that there was no need to even think about who it was.
Gu Zehuai read the message with an expressionless face, then directly moved it to the trash and blocked the number for good measure.
After putting down his phone, Gu Zehuai looked at Wen Jiu, still sleeping soundly in his arms, and pressed a gentle kiss to her forehead.
Sensing something, Wen Jiu lifted her hand and brushed at the air in front of her face, as if displeased at being disturbed in her sleep, but she didn’t wake.
Watching her little reactions, Gu Zehuai smiled softly and got out of bed to wash up.
Wen Jiu woke up while Gu Zehuai was preparing breakfast. Yawning after washing up, she left the bedroom and, seeing Gu Zehuai busy in the kitchen, walked straight over and hugged him from behind.
Gu Zehuai had already heard her moving about. As Wen Jiu wrapped her arms around him, he freed a hand to hold her back.
As they ate breakfast together, Gu Zehuai shared the contents of the message he’d just received.
Wen Jiu was at a loss for words. That incident from seven years ago—she couldn’t understand what Lu Qingli could possibly have to say to Gu Zehuai now. What happened was a fact; it couldn’t be erased, and the wound would always remain in their hearts. She didn’t want Gu Zehuai to see that person and be reminded of the pain of betrayal all over again.
In truth, Wen Jiu understood that what Gu Zehuai had always been unable to let go of was not so much Xu Xinying drugging her, but the fact that Lu Qingli had acted as an accomplice against him.
She could understand Gu Zehuai’s stance. While there was nothing much left to say between them, there still needed to be some closure.
Thinking this, Wen Jiu voiced her thoughts.
Gu Zehuai pondered for a long while before finally nodding.
He honestly had no desire to know what Lu Qingli wanted to say, but Wen Jiu was right—after all these years, this matter needed to be put to rest.
Gu Zehuai didn’t want to be haunted by it every now and then in the future. Compared to the lingering discomfort, the awkwardness of a single meeting was nothing.
With that in mind, Gu Zehuai finally convinced himself to go to the meeting that evening.
Wen Jiu offered to go with him and added, “I’ll just wait nearby. When you’re done, we’ll go home together.”
Gu Zehuai felt once again that Wen Jiu always knew how to heal him, and he nodded with a smile.
The whole day, neither of them left home, and evening soon arrived. After dinner, since it was still early, they didn’t rush out.
When it was nearly time, Wen Jiu took Gu Zehuai’s hand, and they set off for the bar.
Wen Jiu could tell that Gu Zehuai had been a little restless the whole afternoon and after dinner.
So she did her best to soothe his nerves.
When they reached the door of the private room Lu Qingli had reserved, Wen Jiu gestured for Gu Zehuai to go in, while she went to wait next door, in the private room they usually used.
As soon as Gu Zehuai entered, he saw Lu Qingli sitting on the sofa, holding up a glass of wine.
Lu Qingli, upon seeing him, set down the glass, picked up a bottle, poured wine into an empty glass, and pushed it onto the table in front of Gu Zehuai.
Gu Zehuai glanced at the wine, ignored it, and without a word, walked over and sat down on the sofa on the other side, away from the glass.
Noticing all of this, Lu Qingli curled his lips in a self-mocking smile. “Relax, there’s nothing in it.”
Gu Zehuai didn’t want to waste words. “Let’s get to the point. Why did you ask me here?”
Lu Qingli didn’t answer. Instead, he lifted his head and downed the entire glass of wine in one go.
Just as Gu Zehuai’s patience was wearing thin, Lu Qingli finally spoke. “Ah Huai, would you believe me if I said I had my reasons back then?”
