Chapter 116: The True Colors of Heroes
The shadow slowly emerged and, gazing at Wu Jue, who had come to lend a hand, burst out laughing. “Excellent. What shall we play this time?”
Wu Jue carried Alice back to the side, then said to the other twin killer watching the battle, “Why not make it more crowded and really liven things up? Te’er, come help me out. Let’s make it a doubles match!”
The words “doubles match” coming from Wu Jue’s mouth left everyone present momentarily stunned.
Te’er drifted over and said, “All right. How would you like to compete with them?”
He, too, had sensed that something was wrong with Wu Jue, but had held back until now. Seeing Wu Jue take the initiative to challenge them, he cooperated and came over to help.
“Of course we’ll use a more blood-pumping style of combat.” Wu Jue handed Alice to Xun’er, then walked toward the depths of the scenic area, seemingly searching for a suitable setting.
The twin killers appeared together and followed behind, waiting for Wu Jue to choose the scene. They laughed. “What else can we compete in at a time like this? Why not just have a proper fight? The one who looks most like he’s playing dress-up is the Fatty. Too bad he still hasn’t had his turn!”
The Fatty behind them was already growing anxious. In such a spectacular infinite-stream extravaganza, he had yet to get involved. And judging from the situation, the climax was probably about to begin. If he did not join in soon, would there be nothing left for him to do?
He glanced at the only remaining opponent. Xun’er was the sole person who had yet to enter the fray. Surely he was not expected to fight a little girl?
Xun’er cast him a glance while tending to Alice, saying nothing.
After walking farther away, Wu Jue suddenly stopped beside a set of scenery. He looked at the old-fashioned buildings and shops ahead, then unexpectedly walked inside.
Without a word, he changed into another outfit. He had somehow found a tattered cloak and put it on, then donned a pair of sunglasses. He strode out proudly, a contemptuous smile appearing before the twin killers.
He casually held a toothpick between his teeth, raised two guns, and said, “Come on. I choose A Better Tomorrow!”
“Are you trying to impersonate Brother Ma?”
“Too bad you’re bald, so you don’t look the part. At best, you’re just the washed-up Song Zihao!”
The twin killers looked at Wu Jue’s outfit and burst into laughter.
Wu Jue laughed along with them. Tilting his head back, he said, “It looks ridiculous, doesn’t it? But this isn’t a joke!”
He suddenly opened fire. Several shots rang out in rapid succession, bullets streaking toward the twin killers.
The two reacted with astonishing speed and dodged almost simultaneously. One slipped into the shadows, while the other flashed to a corner of the stairwell. The battle was about to erupt.
Laughing wildly, Wu Jue continued forward, firing both guns without pause, as though he had gone completely mad.
“Wu Jue, you’re acting completely unlike yourself! Have you been controlled by someone?” Te’er lunged forward, seized Wu Jue, and pulled him aside, narrowly avoiding several bullets fired by the twin killers.
The two hid behind a corner of the building. Wu Jue’s sunglasses had been removed, yet he continued mechanically reciting lines from the film.
“I’ve waited three years for this opportunity—not to prove that I’m stronger than anyone else, but to prove that what I lost, I will definitely take back!”
He was possessed. Completely possessed.
Te’er swept him with the light of his mirror and immediately concluded that Wu Jue had been possessed by a ghost.
No wonder Wu Jue had been acting so strangely. He had been possessed by a ghost all along.
Te’er cursed himself for not realizing it sooner. Otherwise, he might have helped Wu Jue return to normal. At this point, however, he was utterly helpless.
What should he do? Te’er anxiously considered the problem. The ghost possessing Wu Jue seemed to be a film fanatic, frenziedly playing the role of Brother Ma. Perhaps he should give the ghost a chance to fulfill that dream. It might even help resolve its inner torment.
An idea suddenly struck him. He decided to fight poison with poison and used the light of his mirror to produce a bizarre transformation in Wu Jue’s appearance.
In that instant, Wu Jue seemed to have been reborn. His appearance changed completely, becoming almost identical to Brother Ma’s. Under the summoning power of Te’er’s mirror-light, an illusion suddenly took shape.
Te’er, who had been standing beside him, transformed into Haoge. Holding a gun, he stood ready and said, “Ma, let’s wipe out this bunch of bastards and avenge Ah Jie!”
“Mm!” Wu Jue nodded vigorously. In that moment, it was as if a soul had possessed him.
An exhilarating musical score rang in his ears, and his blood began to surge once more. He clenched the toothpick between his teeth, raised both guns, and strode out proudly.
Outside the building, a group of armed thugs stood waiting in formation. When Wu Jue and Te’er suddenly stormed out, the men surrounded them.
“Stop them! They must not interfere with the bosses’ deal!”
Wu Jue smiled faintly and dropped one of them with a casual shot. Striding forward, he said, “Haoge, I’ll cover the rear. You go in first.”
He opened fire wildly, taking down one opponent after another, completely unaware that everything before him was merely an illusion created by the Divine Mirror.
The twin killers opposite him stared in utter bewilderment. What on earth was he doing? Had he gone insane?
Then Te’er emerged behind him. He aimed the light of his mirror at the two men and shot it out with a whoosh.
“Sorry. I got too deeply into character. I suppose I’ll have to cooperate properly.”
The powerful mirror-light struck the two men with a thunderous blast, sending the brothers flying. In an instant, they too were transformed into the appearance of the film’s great villain.
And so an extraordinary performance unfolded. After dealing with the nonexistent thugs, the two entered the building.
“Gao Yingpei is conducting the deal here. We must catch him red-handed and take him by surprise,” Wu Jue said, turning back.
At some point, Fourth Uncle—another figure created by the mirror-light—had appeared before them.
He nodded at Wu Jue. “Remember to leave him to me.”
“Don’t worry, Fourth Brother. We won’t let any of them escape today,” Te’er replied as he stepped forward. He was playing Haoge.
The three of them fought their way forward and soon reached the interior of the building. Once word spread, the men inside erupted into chaos, and a mass battle began.
Wu Jue charged in at the forefront. After a barrage of gunfire, he suddenly caught sight of a familiar figure.
It was the elder of the twin killers. The man had even put on a pair of sunglasses like Wu Jue’s and was aiming a gun at him with arrogant composure.
They fired almost simultaneously. Bullets whirled recklessly through the air before striking one another, splattering blood in all directions.
A master. A rare master.
Wu Jue retreated to the side and stared at his opponent. Then he suddenly opened fire and leaped forward. The two exchanged shots almost at the same instant, each hitting the other four or five times. When they landed, both were covered in wounds.
Staring at the blood flowing across the floor, Wu Jue suddenly realized that he had fallen into a disadvantageous position.
His gun was empty.
He staggered to his feet, threw away the weapon, and leaned against the wall. With a cold laugh, he removed his sunglasses. Everyone had to die eventually, and meeting an evenly matched opponent was already more than enough.
What was rare was that his opponent seemed to share the same mindset. Instead of firing again, the man silently tossed another handgun over, signaling that they should have a fair contest.
Wu Jue looked at him, then pinned the gun beneath his foot and could not help smiling.
Almost simultaneously, they kicked the guns toward each other and reached out to seize them.
At that moment, the contest came down to who was faster and more accurate.
Wu Jue’s mind held only one thought: victory. He would make his dream of many years come true at that very moment.
He would recreate that awe-inspiring scene from the film.
Wu Jue fired.
He hit his unfortunate opponent.
The twin killer was shot dead.
