Chapter 117: Individual Victories
The illusion vanished without a trace.
The ghost lurking inside Wujue seemed to awaken as well, finally realizing that everything before him had been nothing but an illusion.
Ter and the possessed Wujue had remained concealed at the point where it had all begun, restoring everything to its original state.
“It seems I really did have a dream. Thank you all.”
After thanking Ter, the ghost disappeared.
At that moment, Wujue finally came back to his senses. Looking at the smiling Ter, he asked, “What happened?”
Ter smiled. “Nothing. Just a minor interruption. What do we do next? We still have some formidable enemies to deal with.”
The Twin Assassins, who had also regained consciousness, immediately began shouting furiously. “Wujue, are you coming out or not? You were so arrogant just now. Are you afraid to fight now?”
Wujue glanced at the two figures outside and remembered that he still had a fierce battle ahead of him.
He turned to Ter with a smile. “How is it? Ready? Let’s attack together.”
Ter nodded. In the next instant, his body transformed into a streak of mirror-light that shot through the wall and flew outside.
Wujue let out a roar and rushed out, firing wildly. The Twin Assassins instantly separated, yet in midair they moved like phantoms, striking in perfect synchronization as they pounced toward him.
From behind, the Fatty could not help shouting, “Are you using super slow motion? Are you reenacting The Matrix?”
The Twin Assassins suddenly accelerated and lunged straight at Wujue, launching a rapid series of attacks.
Wujue fired more than a dozen shots with both pistols in the same instant. To his surprise, the two opponents began playing a game of feints and illusions. One moment they merged into a single figure; the next, they shot apart.
The shadow assassin had no physical body and feared no bullets. He completely blocked Wujue’s assault.
If bullets were useless, then it was time to use something more substantial.
With an enraged roar, Wujue lunged forward. Just as the Twin Assassins were about to split apart, Ter suddenly transformed into a streak of mirror-light and shot out, knocking the shadow to the ground and dragging him aside.
That left the elder of the Twin Assassins facing Wujue alone.
This time, they would truly have a proper contest.
“We did not get to fight properly on the stage. Let’s see how you do this time.”
The twin rolled his neck, his voice full of provocation.
Without a word, Wujue struck diagonally with one palm. It was the thirty-second form of Dalin Temple Long Fist—broad, powerful, and unrestrained—as he aimed directly for his opponent’s chest.
Seeing this, the twin employed the technique of overcoming hardness with softness. Their palms met, and after several exchanges, Wujue laughed.
“Defeated already, yet you dare challenge me again? This time, it will not be so simple.”
He immediately engaged the twin in a contest of brute strength. As they grappled, their internal energy erupted violently. Their arms stretched apart, bones cracking sharply, and the impact numbed both of the twin’s arms, nearly breaking them.
Then Wujue changed his technique. His hands curled into claws, sliding upward along the twin’s arms until they reached his shoulders. With a heavy downward press, he executed a precise grappling technique and seized the twin’s body.
“I will ask one question, and you will answer one question. Otherwise, I will break one of your joints each time. This pursuit of ours—was it your own decision, or were you acting under orders from the organization?”
Unable to endure the pain, and restrained by another for the first time, the twin sneered. “Why should I tell you whose orders I received? I simply cannot stand you. And Alice cannot be allowed to remain alive outside the organization. Its secrets must not be exposed.”
“That is all this was for? It seems you are not much of a follower yourself.”
Wujue gave a cold laugh and increased the pressure of his grip. With a sharp crack, he twisted the twin’s left elbow out of joint.
Driven mad by the pain, his opponent suddenly pushed off with both feet and sprang up, kicking fiercely at Wujue. Wujue raised his leg and drove his elbow down, pinning both of the twin’s legs to the ground.
“Do not rush. We have plenty of time. I can question you slowly.”
Wujue continued interrogating him, asking one question after another. Each time the twin resisted, he suffered another round of torment. Eventually, he could not help revealing the truth.
After forcing the answers from him, Wujue learned that the organization known as Ming seemed to have merged with several foreign organizations within the past few months. During that period, it had absorbed a number of groups skilled in supernatural abilities, including the unit to which the Twin Assassins belonged.
With the arrival of new members, the organization had expanded considerably. Its newly appointed second-in-command did not share the same views as the original leader. Although they agreed with Ming’s purpose of cleansing the world of trash, their methods were far more extreme.
They were especially cautious regarding internal security. A traitor like Alice would never be permitted to remain alive and free outside the organization.
Upon hearing this, Wujue could not help sneering. “The world has already fallen into the apocalypse, and you are still worrying about things like this? Is that not rather pointless?”
He casually released the twin, allowing him to collapse onto the ground in a disheveled heap.
“As for Alice, you need not concern yourselves with her anymore. Remember this: I am responsible for her. If Ming still wishes to make enemies of us, then let them come. I have no particular desire to befriend such a chaotic organization.”
Nearly every joint in the twin’s body had been twisted out of place. He lay sprawled on the ground in an awkward position and said, “Go ahead and be arrogant, Wujue. One day, you will regret it. Even if I have to crawl there, I will deliver your message.”
“Then I shall not see you out. This battle is over.”
Wujue clapped his hands and turned back toward the battle between Ter and the other shadow.
That fight had lasted less than a few minutes. Against the Mirror Knight Ter, the shadow’s abilities no longer provided any advantage.
A moment earlier, after Ter had tackled him, the shadow had tried to turn invisible and escape into the darkness beneath the ground. Ter sent a beam of mirror-light sweeping through every corner in which the shadow might have hidden.
The powerful radiance left the shadow nowhere to hide. He was forced to reveal himself once more and flee desperately.
Ter pursued him relentlessly through the air. The White Tiger Divine Mirror on his chest flickered from time to time, revealing the shadow’s hiding place.
He sneered. “It is useless. Before the Divine Mirror, darkness has nowhere to hide.”
A beam of mirror-light shot out and expanded countless times in an instant. After sweeping across the ground, it finally captured the shadow, whose form had shrunk to a mere thread.
The mirror-light transformed into an enormous fist and closed around him.
“Give up. You can admit defeat.”
The shadow gave Ter an evil smile. Then his figure suddenly disappeared, as though it had been annihilated beneath the mirror-light.
Ter could not help sighing. Perhaps the battle had been too cruel.
Suddenly, the Divine Mirror issued a warning. It seemed another enemy was threatening him.
Ter froze for a moment. Then, beneath his own body, from within a shadow that should not have existed, a figure slowly emerged.
“Do you know what the most frightening thing about being a shadow is?”
The shadow laughed wildly.
“It is that I can never die, so long as I can find a corner of darkness.”
The shadow suddenly burst from Ter’s silhouette and lunged at him with a vicious strike. This time, he projected a long shadow of his own, which slammed violently toward Ter.
“Try my version of your technique. I have you to thank for teaching it to me.”
With a thunderous boom, the shadow struck Ter head-on, nearly piercing through his body. Yet at that very moment, mirror-light gathered before Ter’s chest and violently rebounded the attack.
Two beams—one bright, one dark—became entangled in midair and began battling fiercely.
Ter had never expected the shadow to be able to hide within another person’s silhouette and imitate that person’s techniques. Caught off guard, he had allowed the shadow to absorb the power of the Divine Mirror.
At that moment, the shadow possessed the dark aspect of the Divine Mirror. He could command shadows at will, transforming them into any kind of solid attack.
“Damn it! I should not even have a shadow!”
Ter increased the intensity of his mirror-light in fury, conjuring an array of powerful weapons and sending them toward the shadow.
But the shadow laughed wildly as he formed a black shield in midair, blocking most of the attacks.
“What is impossible about that? Anyone who is human has a shadow. It represents the darkness within your heart. You call yourself the Mirror Knight, but surely you are not truly selfless and free from every trace of darkness?”
Those words struck Ter hard. He hesitated for a brief moment.
That was all the opportunity the shadow needed. He drove the darkness into the shape of a gigantic hammer and brought it crashing down.
The blow shattered the blades and swords formed from Ter’s mirror-light and sent him flying. He slammed heavily into the ground.
Staggering to his feet, Ter touched the Divine Mirror against his chest and gave a bitter laugh.
“Indeed, all things are selfish. Even a lofty Mirror Knight cannot escape that law.”
Just as weariness began to rise in his heart, Sel’s voice unexpectedly sounded beside his ear.
“Ter, you have already endured the trials. The Divine Mirror chose you, which means you are its destined master. Even a Mirror Knight must face countless trials. Take up your mission, and learn to withstand doubt.”
Perhaps this was merely another trial.
Facing the mission he bore, Ter knew that he still had a long road ahead of him.
In an instant, the mirror-light before his chest surged with unprecedented brilliance. It condensed once more into a mighty weapon: a colossal divine sword that radiated white light and bore the markings of a white tiger. It descended from the heavens.
Ter’s battle spirit erupted. He charged forward, driving the sword toward the shadow’s hollow darkness.
For a moment, it was like dead wood collapsing before a storm. The shadow continuously conjured countless black weapons, yet every one of them was destroyed without a trace.
His entire body endured a violent impact. His figure shrank again and again, and wherever the sunlight fell upon his darkness, he could no longer display his former might.
“Light and shadow are naturally opposed, yet they are born from one another. Without light, do you truly think a shadow can be resurrected?”
Ter rushed toward the shadow. Powerful mirror-light instantly transformed into a vast net that filled the sky and earth, enveloping him completely.
In the end, the shadow was bound securely.
The shadow had lost.
