They immediately assigned the manpower. Wu Jue took several men who were quick and agile to search for Xue Zhong, while the farm was left under the joint guard of Hugh Lun and Old He.

The group gathered their weapons and hurried off toward the city center.

To be honest, ever since the crisis began, none of them had dared venture into the city. Everyone knew that zombies were swarming there, making it extraordinarily dangerous.

Now that they had been forced to follow Wu Jue, they were all terrified. Their hands clutched their guns tightly as they peered ahead and approached the edge of the city.

Wu Jue expected to find Xue Zhong’s corpse soon. Once he confirmed that the man had died outside, he could exaggerate the danger posed by the zombies when they returned. Old He and his followers would then have no choice but to obey him even more closely.

After all, they lacked the strength to deal with the zombies in the city, while Wu Jue knew how to survive.

“Stay alert,” he warned them in a low voice. “When you see a zombie, don’t panic. Aim for its head. Otherwise, you can only wait to die.”

His words made everyone straighten their backs and raise their guns properly.

They had not gone much farther when a zombie finally appeared, clawing wildly at them and trying to pounce.

Wu Jue reacted with astonishing speed. He raised his sniper rifle and blew the zombie’s head apart, then said, “Move. Avoid the zombies whenever possible. Don’t engage them head-on.”

With him leading the way, they hurried toward the place where he had left the body. Xue Xue was lying across Wu Jue’s back when she suddenly cried out, “Brother! My brother!”

Wu Jue swept his eyes across the scene. Within the approaching horde of zombies, he saw a bloodied figure staggering forward. Almost none of the flesh remained intact on its body, but judging from the tattered clothes and its build, it was unmistakably the dead Xue Zhong.

He had not expected Xue Zhong to transform into a zombie after being torn apart and bitten. The man truly refused to disappear.

Those who had known Xue Zhong immediately began vomiting in disgust. The sight was almost unbearably cruel.

Xue Xue instantly tried to jump down from Wu Jue’s back and chase after her brother, but he seized her tightly.

“Stop moving! Do you want to end up like your brother? Stay on my back and watch carefully!”

He raised his sniper rifle and aimed at Xue Zhong’s head. Wu Jue had already blown the man’s face beyond recognition the night before, and now it looked even more hideous.

I’m sorry. This is all for the sake of survival.

Without the slightest hesitation, Wu Jue fired three shots in succession, blasting Xue Zhong’s deformed head apart.

This time, Xue Zhong was utterly incapable of moving. The headless zombie collapsed onto the ground and gradually fell still.

Wu Jue had eliminated even the last possible weakness. A smug smile appeared at the corner of his mouth, but then he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his back. Xue Xue had bitten him fiercely. It did not hurt much, but he could clearly feel the hatred in her.

The little girl now hated him completely. In the past, Wu Jue might have felt guilty, but today he felt nothing at all. He threw Xue Xue down and said, “Losing your temper won’t change anything. Your brother is dead. You have to learn how to stay alive. Otherwise, in this apocalypse, death is your only destination.”

His gaze was so cold and severe that Xue Xue could not utter a word. She suddenly turned and sprinted away.

Wu Jue stamped his foot and shouted at the others, “Finished vomiting? Get ready to leave.”

He kicked two nearby men in the rear, then set off first in pursuit of Xue Xue.

The little girl was unexpectedly fast. She was also clearly very familiar with the area, darting around several corners before slipping into an alley. When Wu Jue followed, he discovered that the passage was too narrow for him to move freely.

In a fit of anger, he leaped onto the rooftops and bounded across them, searching for Xue Xue.

Suddenly, he heard her scream from below. Wu Jue located the sound at once, raced over, and jumped down into the street.

A group of men stood there, holding Xue Xue and mocking her with filthy laughter.

“Where did this little girl come from? So fair and clean. Why don’t you come home with us?”

“Where are your parents, sweetheart? The streets are crawling with zombies. You shouldn’t be running around alone. Come back with us and have some fun.”

They passed Xue Xue from one man to another without the slightest restraint.

Her little face had gone deathly pale with terror. Only when she saw Wu Jue did she cry out, “Wu Jue, save me! They’re trying to kidnap me!”

Wu Jue glanced at the men. They were all burly and evidently knew how to fight. He immediately raised his sniper rifle and shouted, “Let the girl go, or I won’t be polite.”

When the men saw a bald stranger interfering, they grew furious.

“Who the hell are you? You shave your head and think that makes you tough? You dare come here and ruin our fun? Get lost, or we’ll kill you!”

There was no need to ask. They were vicious thugs. When Wu Jue saw them draw their guns as well, he smiled.

“What is this? Planning a shootout? Do you really think I can’t kill every one of you without breaking a sweat?”

Before they could react, he fired. The bullet struck one man’s pistol and shattered it.

The thugs were instantly shocked and enraged, and they opened fire.

Amid the hail of bullets, Wu Jue twisted and dodged, seizing an opportunity to rush in front of them. He grabbed a tall man by the wrist and snapped it with a sharp twist, breaking his left hand. Then he pressed the sniper rifle against the man’s chest and fired several shots in rapid succession, blasting through his body and injuring several men behind him.

Wu Jue kicked the man away, then used him as a human shield to block the others’ line of sight. He rolled aside and charged forward again.

Seeing how formidable he was, two of the more cunning thugs grabbed Xue Xue and fled into an alley.

Wu Jue raised his sniper rifle and fired twice without even taking aim. One of the men fell, and Wu Jue pursued the other as he disappeared into the alley.

Unexpectedly, it was a dead end. The two men were trapped inside. They turned around and roared furiously.

“You bastard! Are you trying to drive us to our deaths? Let me tell you, the South China Gang is not to be trifled with. Once Lord Jue arrives, you’ll regret ever crossing us!”

“Lord Jue?” Wu Jue had never heard the name before. A cold smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Who is he supposed to be? I’ve never heard of him. Once you’re dead, you can go tell him yourself from the underworld.”

Wu Jue raised his sniper rifle, preparing to give them a quick death, when he suddenly sensed movement behind him. According to his earlier calculations, there had been six enemies in total. He had already taken down four, so there should not have been anyone else.

Apparently, some accomplices had been hiding nearby, escaping his notice.

Wu Jue glanced at the two men in front of him and pretended to relent.

“Fine. You’ve got guts. You’re quite the men, aren’t you? It’s only a little girl. If you want to keep her for yourself, then take her. We’ll return her to you.”

As he spoke, he made a show of loosening his grip on Xue Xue, as though preparing to send her back.

At that moment, Wu Jue heard someone quietly approaching from behind. Without hesitation, he suddenly stepped backward and drove his elbow into the intruder’s nose, sending blood spraying everywhere.

“Xue Xue, get down!”

He raised his hand and fired twice. Two sharp shots rang out, and the two men in front of him each took a bullet through the forehead before collapsing.

Xue Xue broke free and ran desperately toward Wu Jue. He nervously glanced behind him, confirming that no other enemies were approaching, then stepped forward and lifted her into his arms.

With a cold laugh, he said, “Girl, you should know that you owe me your life now.”

Panicked, Xue Xue merely rubbed her eyes and dared not say a word. She had only just escaped the depths of her terror, and her mind was completely blank.

Wu Jue walked over and glanced at the two men he had shot. One of them was still barely alive and groaned, “This isn’t over. The South China Gang will come for you soon…”

Suddenly, he yanked his hand out from his sleeve, and a grenade rolled onto the ground.

Wu Jue’s sharp eyes immediately noticed that the safety pin had already been pulled. He hurriedly dodged.

But it was too late.

A tremendous explosion erupted in the alley, blasting everything apart.
