Chapter 105: Mo Xie
Jiang Yan let out a light chuckle, his eyes shimmering with confidence. “Heh, Yun Yun, this is just the beginning. My true strength hasn’t even been revealed yet.”
With that, Jiang Yan led Yun Yun deeper into the Sword Cavern. Step by step, they finally stood in a place that sent chills down their spines.
Before them lay a black pool, its waters bubbling violently as if boiling. The liquid was dark as ink, reminiscent of modern rivers deeply polluted by industry. Countless white bones floated on its surface, lying silently, witnesses to untold glories and tragedies of the past.
Tsk tsk, obviously not ordinary. The water here must be poisonous—deadly poison, in fact.
Across the pool, several swords were embedded in the ground. The most striking was a long sword at the very center, its blade gleaming with mysterious blue-black light.
A feverish gleam flashed through Jiang Yan’s eyes; his mind was made up. That sword—it’s the one. Wait for me, I’m coming!
Clutching Yun Yun’s hand tightly, Jiang Yan leaped toward the far side of the pool. Landing steadily on the opposite bank, he strode straight toward the long sword radiating mysterious brilliance, excitement overflowing in his heart.
But just as he reached out to draw the sword, a voice filled with authority exploded beside his ear.
“Boy, do not touch the sword!”
An old man’s voice reverberated through the air, stern and undeniable.
Jiang Yan inwardly rolled his eyes. Why is it that, every time at a crucial moment, some “unexpected guest” always jumps out? Is this the wicked world of novels?
He turned to see an elder dressed in black rushing over.
“Senior, why can’t I touch that sword?” Jiang Yan asked, a hint of puzzlement in his voice.
Yun Yun regarded the elder with equal confusion, her eyes full of questions.
The Sword Sovereign of Infinity spoke firmly and with confidence. “I am the Sword Sovereign of Infinity; that sword belongs to me. How can you, a mere youth, pull it out?”
Jiang Yan frowned slightly. Unable to gauge the elder’s true strength, he decided to communicate first.
“Senior, the sword is still here, which means it has no master. Yet you claim it as yours. What do you mean by that?”
The Sword Sovereign of Infinity smiled faintly, his gaze revealing the weariness of passing years. He said,
“Decades ago, I visited this place—likely before you were even born. The name of this sword is Mo Xie.
Back then, I managed to pull it out halfway. Unfortunately, I was injured at the time and couldn’t persist, so the sword remained here.”
His eyes, sharp as blades, fixed upon Jiang Yan.
“Today, as fate would have it, I’ve returned to draw the sword again, only to run into you. Give up, boy. Only I can pull this sword!”
Listening to the Sword Sovereign’s words, Jiang Yan wanted to retort: Confidence is good, but excessive confidence becomes arrogance! This old man seems a bit unhinged; best not to clash head-on.
Jiang Yan’s lips curved into a faint smile, and he made a “please” gesture toward the Sword Sovereign. “Senior, then please, draw the sword.”
“At least you know your place!”
The Sword Sovereign snorted coldly and strode toward the Mo Xie sword.
Yun Yun, seeing the elder’s smug demeanor, puffed up her cheeks indignantly, but she knew not to act rashly, lest she cause trouble for Brother Yan. Still, if the old man dared show further disrespect, she would not hold back!
The Sword Sovereign reached the Mo Xie sword, rubbed his hands together, and loosened up his muscles, looking for all the world as if preparing for exercise.
This odd behavior left Jiang Yan dumbfounded. Just pull the sword already! Why all this fuss?
“Whew…” The Sword Sovereign exhaled deeply, gripped the hilt with his right hand, and pulled with all his might.
Yet, no matter how much strength he used, the sword remained stubbornly rooted, unmoving as if it had grown into the earth.
He paused, “Huff, huff…” blowing on his right hand.
Then, surprisingly, he tried with both hands at once.
Jiang Yan watched the double-handed attempt and found it increasingly amusing. The scene looked absurdly like someone cheerfully pulling a turnip!
The Sword Sovereign strained with all his might, face flushed and veins bulging, tugging for ages, but the Mo Xie sword was steady as a mountain. Jiang Yan began to seriously doubt the “half-pulled” story.
Did he really pull it out halfway? Just this?
If he managed a centimeter, I’ll count it as a win!
Time ticked by…
The Sword Sovereign persisted, relentlessly trying to draw the sword.
Jiang Yan grew bored, yawning several times. He settled cross-legged, absorbing and converting the surrounding spiritual energy, preparing to cultivate.
Yun Yun’s patience had been worn thin by the Sword Sovereign’s stubbornness. She bit her lip and couldn’t help but speak up:
“Old man, if you can’t do it, let my Brother Yan give it a try.”
The Sword Sovereign was drenched in sweat, truly wanting to rest, but under the gaze of two juniors, he couldn’t lose face. Though the little girl’s words were unpleasant, she had given him an excuse to step back.
So, the Sword Sovereign stopped, snorted coldly, and said, “Boy, I’m not in form today. I’ll give you a chance—go ahead and try.”
Jiang Yan stood, patted the dust from his clothes, and strode toward the Mo Xie sword. “Then let me try. Senior, please step aside.”
“Brother Yan, you’re the best! Go for it!”
Yun Yun waved her small hands below, cheering for Jiang Yan.
Jiang Yan smiled at her. “Little one, keep your eyes peeled.”
As soon as the words left his lips, Jiang Yan gripped the hilt with his right hand, summoned all his strength, and pulled hard, silently chanting: Sword, come!
Boom… boom…
The ground began to tremble, and the Mo Xie sword slowly rose from the earth.
The Sword Sovereign of Infinity was utterly dumbfounded. The Mo Xie sword seemed ready to acknowledge this youth as its master.
How could this be?
Were all his years of effort nothing but a joke?
He had worked so hard to grow stronger and earn the sword’s recognition, becoming a Sword Sovereign for this very reason!
At this thought, the Sword Sovereign’s eyes flashed with malice, and he lunged at Jiang Yan, sword in hand.
Yun Yun immediately flew forward to intervene.
In that critical instant, the Mo Xie sword shot out, its blade flashing, and severed the Sword Sovereign’s weapon.
The Sword Sovereign stared at the broken sword lying in two pieces on the ground, consumed by grief and rage.
That sword was called the Infinity Sword, itself a supreme spiritual weapon, with its own sword spirit—a lifelong companion.
He knelt beside the broken sword, caressing it, eyes filled with endless sorrow and fury. “Infinity, I will avenge you.”
Yun Yun’s eyes blazed with anger, and she shouted, “You shameless old man! How dare you try to sneak an attack!”
Jiang Yan no longer addressed him as a senior, but mocked coldly, “Old man, when your skills fall short, you should accept defeat gracefully. Sneak attacks are not the conduct of a gentleman! Tsk, Sword Sovereign? I think ‘scoundrel’ suits you better!”
