Chapter 26: The Child Who Cries Gets the Candy
The ambulance rushed the patient to the nearest hospital, and he was immediately taken into the emergency room.
Lin Wanbai waited at the door of the emergency room, and Lin Zhouye arrived shortly after.
“Sit down for a moment, there’s no need to worry so much.”
She took a deep breath, her hand at her side clenched into a tight fist, suppressing her anger. “That old witch really doesn't care about anyone, does she?”
“This incident probably wasn't orchestrated by Jiang Shuzhi.”
She frowned, sneering, “If not her, then who? Who else could it be?”
“The old master knew about today's occasion. Jiang Shuzhi certainly couldn't restrain herself, but he invited the couple to go boating and drink tea.”
“So what? Does that prove it wasn’t her doing? For something like this, she doesn’t need to get her hands dirty herself.”
“Calm down.”
Lin Wanbai turned her head, casting him a sideways glance. “If your beloved had been hurt like this, who knows how furious you’d be?”
When she was angry to the extreme, she became strangely calm.
From the very beginning, she had placed the blame squarely on Jiang Shuzhi. For this matter, evidence was unnecessary.
Respect for elders was important, but for those whose conduct was vile, Lin Wanbai believed in fighting fire with fire.
Lin Zhouye could almost guess her thoughts. “Don’t do anything reckless before we figure out the truth.”
She snorted twice, saying nothing.
“I actually think Jiang Shuzhi wasn’t behind this.”
“Then who do you think it was?” she pressed.
Lin Zhouye raised an eyebrow, “Take a guess.”
She didn’t need to guess; his eyes made it clear who he meant.
“Why are you still prejudiced against Fu Juxing? He’s put so much effort into this project. Is it really necessary for him to pull something like this at such a critical moment? Why?”
Lin Zhouye slipped his hands into his pockets, smiled, “Why? Look in the mirror, and you’ll know why.”
Lin Wanbai: “We haven’t seen each other in so long, and the first thing you do is try to upset me, is that it?”
He sighed, shook his head, his expression exceptionally gentle, and brushed aside her loose hair. “I just want to remind you, Fu Juxing isn’t a good man. No matter how much you like him, you should keep your wits about you—don’t let yourself get hurt.”
“Worrying over nothing.” She brushed his hand away, chin lifted, lips pressed tight, saying nothing.
But the two photos saved in her phone weighed on her mind like stones, and she bit back her unease, feigning composure.
…
Fu Juxing’s burns on his back were quite serious. The knife wound on his abdomen wasn’t deep, thanks to his quick reflexes. The nurse propped a soft pillow under his stomach, and he rested more comfortably lying prone.
As soon as the nurse left, Fu Juxing tried to get up and asked Liang Xi to fetch his clothes.
Lin Wanbai and Lin Zhouye entered, just as he insisted on rising, with Liang Xi holding him back; their gestures had an air of intimacy.
The door opened, and their movements halted.
Liang Xi froze for a moment, then promptly pushed him back down. “Boss, you’d better stay put here. The resort’s aftermath will be handled by Miao Sen and me.” She looked up at Lin Wanbai. “Madam, please persuade President Fu. He insists on returning to the resort.”
With that, she stepped aside, keeping a respectful distance.
Lin Wanbai walked over and sat in the chair by the bed, her expression gentle as she looked at him. “Doesn’t it hurt?”
Fu Juxing: “It’s all right.”
“You—if you lost a chunk of flesh, you wouldn’t admit it hurt. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, but you never learn.”
He sat facing her, keeping his wounded back hidden, eyes lowered, a faint smile on his lips.
Lin Wanbai tilted her chin. “Lie down. I’ll handle the aftermath at the resort. Can you trust me? If not me, at least trust Uncle?”
Lin Zhouye stood behind her, echoing her words. “Don’t worry. This project won’t be ruined.”
Fu Juxing said nothing, his attitude clear—he was still determined to go back.
Lin Wanbai knew she couldn’t persuade him, so she turned to Lin Zhouye. “Find two people to watch him. Don’t let him leave the hospital. I’m going back to clean up the mess.”
She got up to leave, but Fu Juxing caught her wrist, pulling back her sleeve to reveal the wound on her arm.
He hadn’t forgotten.
Lin Wanbai was startled; she’d thought he hadn’t seen it.
“It’s just a scratch. I’ll have someone fix it when I get back.”
She tried to pull her hand away, but Fu Juxing held fast, gazing at her wound for a moment. “Let the nurse take care of it.”
“All right, but please, Mr. Fu, stay here and rest as you should. Is that too much to ask?”
She turned, bent down to meet his eyes, and gently tapped his forehead with her finger. “Be good.”
He lowered his gaze, his eyes still fixed on her arm, and nodded. “Okay.”
