Qiao Xi didn’t think much about it; after all, she would know once she went to see him.

“Do you want me to go with you?” asked Shan Chouchou.

“No need,” Qiao Xi replied and stepped out.

At the stairwell, she saw Gu Dieyan.

She nodded politely and was about to pass by, but Gu Dieyan stepped right in front of her.

“Is there something you want?” Qiao Xi asked.

Gu Dieyan took a deep breath, her usual fragile demeanor hardened with resolve. She stared straight at Qiao Xi. “You—leave Yu Fan.”

“I have nothing to say.” She had said everything at noon and didn’t want to repeat herself. She tried to walk past, but Gu Dieyan grabbed her arm.

“You have no right to be with Yu Fan. You don’t deserve him. So please leave Yu Fan alone and don’t hurt him.” Her voice was soft but her eyes were unwavering.

Qiao Xi didn’t understand what had come over her; perhaps she thought Gu Dieyan’s words earlier were lies.

She didn’t want to explain further. Besides, this was the stairwell with students passing by, and since Gu Dieyan was well-known at school, many boys were standing nearby watching them. It was hardly a place for a conversation.

“I have things to do.” Not wanting to be entangled here any longer, she forcefully pulled her hand away.

Perhaps she pulled too hard, and the delicate Gu Dieyan was pushed back two steps, right onto the stairs. Her foot slipped, and she suddenly fell backward.

“Ah…” she screamed in panic.

Qiao Xi noticed immediately and reached out to catch her, but it was too late. She could only watch helplessly as Gu Dieyan tumbled down the stairs…

What followed was chaotic. Some screamed in fright, others rushed to Gu Dieyan’s side, and some ran to inform the teachers…

Qiao Xi stood frozen, never expecting that she would cause Gu Dieyan to fall down the stairs.

Soon, the teachers arrived and took the unconscious Gu Dieyan to the hospital.

“How could you do that? How can you push someone down the stairs…”

“That’s outrageous! Someone like you doesn’t deserve to stay in school…”

“Exactly, get out of school…”

Suddenly, a barrage of curses filled the air. Qiao Xi remained silent, unresponsive.

Hearing the commotion outside, Shan Chouchou ran out of the classroom to see what was happening. She heard the taunts and even saw someone trying to push Qiao Xi. She quickly stepped forward to shield the unresponsive Qiao Xi and shouted at the crowd, “Hey, what are you saying?!”

“Such a cold-hearted person doesn’t deserve to stay in school. Get out of Yingran, go back to Fengyang…”

“Get out of Yingran, go back to Fengyang…”

No one paid attention to Shan Chouchou’s protests; they all chanted the slogan in unison.

“Who do you think you are, telling us to leave? Is this school yours?” Although outnumbered, Shan Chouchou wasn’t afraid.

“Chouchou, calm down,” Gu Panxi urged. Seeing them surrounded by so many people and Chouchou still shouting, she feared it might turn violent and hurried forward. “Now’s not the time to pick a fight.” Given the numbers on the other side, they could easily overpower them.

“I don’t care. If they want to fight, let them!” Shan Chouchou refused to back down. To do so now would be a disgrace to Fengyang; she wouldn’t be able to face her friends back home.

“Why are you like this…” Gu Panxi fretted, caught between both sides.

Fortunately, a student came over and announced, “Qiao Xi, the principal wants to see you.”

With the principal involved, the students naturally dared not cause more trouble.

“I’ll go with you,” Shan Chouchou said.

“No need,” Qiao Xi replied and headed straight to the principal’s office.
