When Jia’er Xu arrived at the Student Council office, the boy was already waiting for her at the door.

“Has Qiao Xi left?” she asked, childlike and adorable.

The boy blushed slightly and replied in a low voice, “She’s already gone. The vice president is in the president’s office.”

“Got it, thank you!” Jia’er Xu gave him a bright smile and headed toward the president’s office.

She knocked, then pushed the door open.

“I knew you’d be here. School’s just out and you came straight over. Aren’t you going to eat? You’ll make yourself sick if you skip meals,” she said, her face full of concern as she walked up to Ouya.

“What brings you here?” Ouya asked.

“Hmm, don’t you like seeing me, Brother Ya?” Jia’er Xu’s face fell as if hurt.

“Of course not. Have a seat.”

“That’s wonderful! Brother Ya doesn’t mind seeing me. I’m so happy!” Jia’er Xu beamed like a child who’d been given a treat, sweet and delighted.

“As it happens, I wanted to talk to you about something,” Ouya added.

“Brother Ya, what did you want to talk to me about?” Jia’er Xu asked, blinking her innocent eyes.

“It’s about Qiao Xi,” Ouya said.

“Sister Xi? I get along with her very well! I even showed her around the school,” Jia’er Xu replied, all sweetness and innocence.

“That’s good. Yu Fan is the president, and you’re his cousin. You mustn’t embarrass him.”

“I understand, Brother Ya. I won’t embarrass my cousin, and I certainly won’t embarrass you. But Brother Ya, you seem to treat Sister Xi especially well. I almost feel jealous—I’ve known you longer than she has,” Jia’er Xu said, aggrieved.

“She’s a transfer student. As vice president, it’s only right for me to look after her.”

“Is it really only that?” she pressed.

“Yes.” Ouya smiled, making Jia’er Xu’s cheeks flush. Brother Ya’s smile was truly captivating—she liked him so, so much. She was determined not to let anyone take him away. Not only had Qiao Xi been singled out for his special attention, she had even held his hand. Jia’er Xu could not forgive that—and she would never let Qiao Xi get close to Brother Ya again.

“Brother Ya, shall we have dinner together later? My cousin’s been on leave lately, so you’ve been handling the Student Council affairs alone. We haven’t eaten together in ages. Let’s have dinner tonight, please?”

“I have something to do this evening.”

“Dinner won’t take that long. Brother Ya, do you dislike me? If I did something wrong, just tell me and I’ll change.”

“No, I really have something to do. We’ll have dinner another day,” Ouya replied gently, his voice soft and pleasant.

“All right then.” Jia’er Xu sounded disappointed, but quickly smiled again. “It’s a promise! You can’t go back on it.”

“I won’t,” said Ouya.

――――――

As soon as Qiao Xi arrived at school, she saw Ouya and Jia’er Xu standing together at the gate, chatting and laughing. Ouya’s smile was faint, but it was enough to make every girl passing by blush.

Yet no one dared approach them; after all, Jia’er Xu stood right by Ouya’s side, her radiant smile seeming to declare that the boy beside her belonged to her.

Qiao Xi walked straight into the school.

Nearby, Zhou Ruidan and a few students stood by the gate. Watching Qiao Xi walk past, Zhou Ruidan felt both indignant and irritated.

Dan Chouchou was still on leave. After all, as a girl, no one would want to go out with bruises all over.

“Seeing her swagger past like that really pisses me off, Ruidan. Are we really not going to do anything? I’d love to teach her a lesson,” one of the girls said to Zhou Ruidan.
